Very disappointing experience.
My partner and I dined at this restaurant and ordered a ramen, a sashimi bento, takoyaki, and a glass of Asahi beer. Unfortunately, the overall experience was underwhelming and left us quite disappointed.
Firstly, the food took a surprisingly long time to arrive — despite there being only three tables of customers at the time. The beer came out first, and we had to wait around 15 minutes before the rest of the food showed up.
The ramen was the biggest letdown. The broth was overly salty, and the noodles were thin and completely overcooked, lacking any chewiness or bite. No one asked us about our preferences when ordering. To make things worse, the chicken katsu came inside the soup, which completely ruined the texture — the batter was soggy and unappetizing. This is basic ramen service that fried items should be served separately to maintain their crispiness.
The sashimi bento was underwhelming in portion. It only contained small cuts of salmon, tuna, and a few bits of avocado — that’s it. The rice was Japanese and cooked well, but it couldn’t make up for the overall lack of variety or substance in the dish.
The takoyaki came with just five tiny pieces. They actually tasted quite nice, but the portion was disappointingly small. It would’ve felt more authentic if topped with some bonito flakes.
Honestly, the only thing that didn’t disappoint was the Asahi beer — because, well, they didn’t have to make it.
As someone who has lived in East Asia for decades and regularly eats Japanese food, I do feel I have a fair basis to judge this. And unfortunately, I have to say — this was far below average. We didn’t get to try more dishes, but based on what we had, we won’t be...
Read moreIt's hard for me to write this review as I had such high hopes and Japanese restaurants with halal options are hard to come by. We had the Futomaki, Chicken katsu curry, Takoyaki, and Yasai Tempura. Across the board, items were quite flavourless, overly oily, and overall unimpressive which is sad because the place seemed authentic. I've never had such a flavourless roll and the Katsu Curry's quality did not make sense for the price, though the Takoyaki was decent. I could not tell if the yasai tempura was seasoned at all. The worst aspect was honestly the fact that we were asked about drinks and tap water was not a suggestion, so I quite foolishly thought that "still water" (as opposed to sparkling) would mean tap water, which resulted in us being charged £5 for one bottle in the end. I've never seen staff at a restaurant fail to offer tap water, and I won't give benefit of the doubt next time that's bypassed haha. Generally, I've enjoyed the food more at places like Wagamama's and even Kokoro which is aimed towards budgeting students.
The atmosphere and service are quite pleasant so I truly do hope the food improves to match that. For someone who hasn't had Japanese food before I'd see the appeal - especially with the impressive dish presentation - but as someone who is quite used to the flavours, I'll stick to making this sort of...
Read moreCame to celebrate my wife's birthday on the 14/3 /25 with our 18 Month old daughter and was very happy with the warm welcome we received. Highchair was in place ready and even a space was cleared for us to put the pram. We were then asked if we would prefer to eat where they had setup for us,perhaps another table or even upstairs but we preferred to be downstairs . Having worked at the top end of hospitality for many years now we felt the food was very fresh ,well thought out especially the flavours and presented with care. The takoyaki and spicy tuna urumaki being the star of the show out of the 5 small plates and 4 urumaki we ordered among other things wow unbelievable how good Definitely the best takoyaki we've had in any Japanese restaurant in the uk The front of house was very professional, polite and tried to go above and beyond wherever they could( baring in mind that the restaurant has only been open for roughly 4 months or so). The atmosphere wasn't too loud where we had to shout to be heard neither to quiet for our little one to disturb the other guests
All in all a very good evening and we are looking forward to the next bit of free time we have to go back and experience more of the menu. Don't just take our word for it and visit you'll understand...
