Back in 2021, I ordered Rinkoffâs chocolate babka and challah from Gorillas several times. The babka was hit-or-miss, sometimes quite dry. The challah had a nice texture but I didnât like the taste. At some point, Gorillas stopped selling then. Recently, I found that I could order Rinkoffâs products on UberEats(it seems that they expanded the delivery area) and decided to give them another go. I ordered challah and babka again, with some other things I havenât tried before (wish you could add other products like sourdough bread to UberEats). Overall I would say that itâs a solid bakery. Challah: I love the texture, but the caraway seed (or cuminïŒ) in it really puts me off. Itâs on the sweet side, personally I prefer it to be a little bit salty. Besides, it says on UberEats that âComes plaited or roundâ; I added a note asking for plaited but received a round one. updateïŒYes it as poppy seeds on the outside, but it also has caraway seeds inside. I can distinguish between caraway and poppy seeds. Maybe caraway seeds just accidentally came into the dough. Bagel: The texture is close to that from Beigel Bake(brick lane), quite doughy, which I donât like. But itâs sweeter and therefore better if you eat only with cream cheese (brick lane bagel is too bland unless eaten with strong fillings like salt beef). One of them was squashed by delivery. Chocolate babka: Still full of chocolate; much fresher than the ones I used to get from Gorillas. Cinnamon bun: I really love the texture, will order again even though I donât like cinnamon. Blueberry muffin: Large and fluffy, lighter than a normal muffin, enough blueberries and...
Read moreI came at 5.20pm to get a bagel, and it seemed like the bakery was closing - I asked if it was, and the staffer smiled and said not yet. When I asked for an egg and mayo bagel, the response from both staffers was âhmmmmmmm not sure, noâ. After several awkward seconds in silence, I asked ânot sure? Can you checkâ, which they reluctantly did. One of the staffers made the bagel, while the other gave the âI wanna leave earlyâ dirty look. He even said âsometimes we run out of stockâ, which I said smilingly âthanks for checkingâ. When I got the bagel, I asked for a cronought. Thatâs where everything went down hill! The dirty look employed had been cleaning stuff all this time, stops what heâs doing throwing everything in the counter loudly, on purpose, grabs a box and the last one of the cronoughts I wanted WITH HIS BARE DIRTY HANDS. Then, always with his back turned to me, asked âanything elseâ, in a condescending way, bagged everything and looked at me like âthere, go away nowâ. Iâve worked in several coffee houses, bars, hotels, restaurants etc, and understand that people like to leave early. What I never did was treat a client like that, specially if the client is nice. Iâd speak with the short chunky guy that works there Saturday afternoons, as he needs customer service reminders. Apart from this experience, you guys have always treated me well, never thought this would...
Read moreWhen I was primary school back in the 1970's I lived in Ronald Street. We always visited my nan on a Saturday and I was always upset the bakery was closed but it was open on a Sunday... when we didn't visit . I didn't understand it at all and I guess I was all about the cake đ°đ I used to look forward to the wonderful bakery smells as we walked by in the square. I only remember one lady who worked there. She always had her hair in a huge up-do (kinda Bet Lynch style I think) I was always amazed by her hair and how she got it all to stay there đ I was extremely happy to discover that after looking at the area I grew up in that the shop is still going strong!!! A good business will always prevail if it has great cakes right? I can't remember what my mum bought me but I remember the shop was a teeny tiny shop (looks like you have the whole row now) and having a happy feeling whenever it comes to mind over the year's. Stay strong Rinkoff and I hope you continue to bake for many years đđŻđ I just remembered Neil, the guy who owned the sweet shop a few doors down the row. He was a cool guy and used to give me a sweet whenever I took pop bottles back for a small amount of money. Maybe I remember a sewing machine shop being there for a long time and also an off licence. Kinda TARDIS like... because upon going inside the 'offy' it was such a long shop and the till always seemed so...
