Minimalist and polished presention, refined taste, and interesting flavours. I came here on a recommendation by a bartender south of the Thames when I mentioned I like cocktails that are challenging and creative, without being sweet, kitschy, OTT, or "quirky". I wanted grown up drinks. He pointed me towards SOMA and said it's where he and his coworkers often go. That sealed the deal. A cocktail bartender at a bar where I like the cocktails is suggesting a place HE likes to go? Sold.
I thoroughly enjoy drinks like this. No overly complicated or trendy garnishes. Ingredients that aren't overwhelming yet still uncommon, and in unique combinations.
I tried 5 and all were good, however they taste a little soft. Not heavy on the spirits. As a result, a few were refreshing but light. Could be due to the UK standard of 25ml per measure instead of a standard US ounce (30ml). But if you're a lightweight, or only an occasional drinker, they may seem strong. Others were nice and solid and felt like a proper cocktail -- although not sure I have met many cocktails in the city overall worth their £15+ price tags. (Exorbitant cost tbh, but I guess most are in prime London real estate and rents must be astronomical.) It really seemed to depend. We went for the Tumeric, Chaat, Kashmiri, Mango, and Cashew.
Servers were all good too, but special shout out the woman cos she was awesome. Super helpful and informative.
The only real issue I have was the vibe. I get what the ideal is with the communal table... but I don't like it. Just personal preference. I enjoy sitting at a bar; I also enjoy a small table. I don't enjoy communal tables unless I have to (in a cafeteria, family meal, etc.) There is little I want to do at a fancy cocktail bar more than share a table, shoulder to shoulder, with 20 strangers. It's just uncomfortable. Any other seating arrangement and I probably would have enjoyed the experience far more. But I did not make a reservation, so we were lucky to get a spot at all.
Drinks are quite good, service is good, ambience is... not my style. But if you don't mind it, you will find legit tasty...

Read moreIn the ever-evolving world of cocktails, there’s a thin line between innovation and utter madness. Enter the “Shallot” cocktail – an unholy union of gin, sake, spiced pickle brine, and, yes, shallots. It’s as if someone decided to take the culinary essence of a stew and force it into your martini glass. Spoiler alert: it doesn’t belong there.
Imagine sipping a martini that went through a midlife crisis, packed up its olives, and moved to the produce aisle. The first sip hits like an onion soup starter at a questionable diner – sharp, overpowering, and far too confident for its own good. The spiced pickle brine adds a layer of saltiness that feels like it’s actively working against the rest of the drink, while the gin and sake sit awkwardly in the background, like two party guests wondering how they ended up in such a mess.
The real culprit here, of course, is the shallot. Shallots may have a home in a roast or perhaps an elegant sauce, but in a cocktail? It’s like inviting your tax accountant to a rave – out of place, uncomfortable, and frankly unwelcome.
Ultimately, the Shallot Cocktail is a bold experiment that proves one thing: some ingredients are best left in the kitchen. If you’re looking for a reminder of why cocktails and cooking onions don’t mix, this drink is your cautionary tale – one you’ll be eager to forget after the first sip.
Aside from one less-than-perfect drink, this place is absolutely fantastic. The cocktails are expertly crafted, and the speakeasy ambiance, elevated with a touch of elegance, feels straight out of a classic film. It's the kind of atmosphere you want to get lost in. I’ll definitely keep...
