🚇 Forest Hill 🍺 £5.80 London Pilsner
A Unique Post Office Pub Experience.
The Sylvan Post is located on Dartmouth Road in Forest Hill, South East London. The nearest station is Forest Hill Overground, it’s a four minute walk to get here.
This pub is situated in a former 1960’s post office and is run by Portobello Brewery.
The owner’s of this pub have embraced the building’s history by retaining many of its original features. This is a one bar pub that has its main bar area at the front and a couple of snug areas at the rear. The servery has a thin 60’s style counter with brass fittings. All around the pub you will find kitsch 60s decor like the vintage formica tables and wooden seating. To the right of the servery are a number of booths with an eclectic mix of prints and photos. The stand out features is the postal memorabilia including framed postage stamps and telegrams. There is also post boxes marked Abroad, Country and London plus the old strong room now is converted into a cool little snug.
The beer line up was decent and included a number of beers from Portobello Brewery including two cask ales and a good selection of No & Low. I decided on a pint of London Pilsner, my pint hit the spot, price point was average. There is traditional pub grub menu available with some interesting veggie options, Fish & Chips costs £15.50. For those visiting on a Sunday, Roasts take centre stage.
We arrived around 2pm on a warm Saturday afternoon in February. The pub was busy and had a nice local neighbourly feel to it. The punters were predominantly young professionals with their young children here for a celebration. There were few other couples and families in attendance enjoying this unique environment. The service was great, the staff were upbeat and friendly.
The pub hosts DJ and Quiz Nights, there are also deals on pints during the week for £4.50, check socials for timings and info.
The 60’s decor, postal memorabilia, great beer, popular food and local pub feel made for a very enjoyable and unique pub experience. The @sylvan.post is a must visit if you’re in the area.

Updated review:
I am delighted to share my experience of visiting the Sylvan post pub, and I must say that it was an absolute pleasure. From the moment I walked in, I was impressed by the ambiance and the warm and welcoming atmosphere. The pub had a charming old-world feel, with a unique character that I found to be truly captivating.
One of the highlights of my visit was undoubtedly the exceptional cheese selection that they had to offer. As a cheese lover, I was thrilled to find such a diverse and delicious range of cheeses to choose from. Whether you prefer soft or hard cheeses, or even something a bit more exotic, the Sylvan post pub has got you covered. The food was beautifully presented, and the taste was simply divine.
But what really stood out for me was the exceptional service that I received from the friendly staff, especially the manager Emily. She was extremely knowledgeable about the menu and the wine selection, and her passion for the pub was evident in her attentive and friendly approach. She made me feel like a valued guest, and I really appreciated her efforts in making my visit an unforgettable one.
Another unique feature of the pub that I found intriguing was the bank safe. It added a sense of history and character to the building, and it was fascinating to learn about its story. It's these small details that really make the Sylvan post pub stand out from the crowd.
Overall, I cannot recommend the Sylvan post pub enough. If you're looking for a memorable experience with a great cheese selection, friendly staff, and a unique ambiance, then this is the place for you. I will definitely be back for more, and I'm sure you'll...
Read moreI booked a couple of tables in the back area at the Sylvan Post on a Saturday afternoon for a little photoshoot some friends and I were doing. I was a little nervous, as this was the first time I had put together an event of this kind, but the tolerant and wonderful staff, the very kind manager and, of course, the adorable and quirky space facilitated a very successful meetup.
My friends and I had an awesome time, we snapped a lot of pictures and even though we took up a fair bit of space with our photo equipment and setup for a couple of hours, the staff trusted us to be reasonable and make sure we weren't in the way of them or other guests, which we did.
On a more general note, here are my impressions: SPACE - sizeable, quirky and original, love the cozy back area and the use of old walk-in safes as private booths. Has oodles of atmosphere and character. CONSUMABLES - my friends and I mostly had beer and some Curiosity Cola soft drinks, so I can't comment on the selection or quality of most drinks, but the food was great. We had a veg sharing platter and it was delicious - possibly some of the best falafel I have ever had was on that plate. CROWD - we were there 3-8pm on a Saturday and it was your standard weekend lunch pub fare - families and small groups, all nice and pretty chill about what we were doing.
Unfortunately, I live on the very opposite end of town, so this can't be a regular haunt for me, but for another special occasion, I'll definitely be visiting again, next time perhaps sans tripods and...
