Have been here a few times recently and have had nothing but a good experience. In American we would label this more as a dive bar (little run down and seems like more of a local spot) and that is often an appeal to a certain type of people. It’s warn with charm and history and views that are unmatched. We also really enjoy the pub food here. Especially the honeycomb ice cream and toffee pudding. We arrive early evening and have a drink while waiting for the kitchen to open. Dinners come out hot and delicious and finish our meal with dessert. A beer and pop cost around 11 pounds with entrees near 15 pounds each and dessert around 7 pounds each. We like the upstairs seating because there are beautiful views of Tower Bridge and the Shard. They encourage no cell phone use and the place fills up around 7pm. Reservations are encouraged as there are roughly 9-10 tables upstairs. More seating downstairs in the bar where there are dart boards and a fireplace. Bar staff is friendly and always tentative when placing orders. Food comes out in reasonable time and the gentleman running the upstairs is friendly and always checks how on how the meal was. Read some of the other reviews and while I don’t discount them, I can only speak from my experiences which have been great thus far. Will definitely be back!

Great views of The Shard and Tower Bridge. We sat upstairs, which I think is better. Probably also worth visiting in the summer as the outdoor areas look decent. Cosy for the autumns but also pretty busy. We went on a Wednesday night. No loud music, just pub chatter. :p Pubs all seem to be struggling these days with their kitchens, taking orders, unable to provide everything on the menu or all described for that meal. I've seen this in almost every pub I've visited in the last few months. It probably would help if people book and tell them they are eating, so they can plan. I think it is important we support a thriving pub culture, so popping to different pubs more. The staff seemed like they were a bit stretched, but did a fab job trying to manage it all. Overall I'd say this is a pub to visit. I generally write positive reviews of businesses I want to succeed. :p

Brilliant location right on the river, it's a great place to be on a bitterly cold Saturday afternoon in November. A real fire is a winner when the weather is cold and the Angel has one. With lots of windows, this pub is bright and welcoming on a sunny afternoon. The original features, cast iron column, open fire and a 'snug' for a more intimate space all add to the laid back atmosphere. The decor includes historical photos of the area which are well worth a look. The food and drink menu (mulled wine in winter) is good and they also offer some cocktails. We had a couple of pints and shared a cheese plate and they were good value. Nice, chatty staff that know their beers gave us a smiling welcome. The toilets were in good order and well stocked and clean. We will definitely plan a walk of the Southbank taking in the Angel again next summer. A return visit is a must.

The location and the pub are amazing. However food quality and service are unbelievably low.

It is a forecasted sunny Saturday - so obviously it will be busy. We ordered one portion of calamary, two lager half pints and a pint of dark beer. The guy at till was clearly not trained to run the tab. Forgot the entire order, poured us a pint of the lager. When we pointed out that we wanted two half pints, he started pouring it in two smaller glasses, foaming everything and obviously not able to pour everything. He dumped in my hands two small glasses half-full half-foam and the third pint glass with the remainder of the lager. My friend has been a bartender for years and told him that he should have not served beer in such bad quality. The manager jumps accusing my friend that she is insulting her staff and that she will not tolerate it. I point to owner the three ridiculous glasses and tell her my friend is not insulting anyone put pointing out facts. Manager says 'you wanted it split and poured in smaller glasses' and I point out that I ordered two half pints of the lager. She mumbles they are busy.

Now my question is: when you know that you have your busy day and time, why are you putting someone clearly incompetent to run the till. Not only that, the guy was clearly untrained and incompetent to also pour drinks. Obviously customers would be complaining, don't turn us into the bad ones. Train your staff how to run the till a d how drinks are properly poured. Plan in advance for busy periods, put trained and experienced personal at the till....

Afterwords we waited 30+ minutes for a calamary order, the guy at the till lied to me that the order is on its way because 10 minutes later it turns out it was not even ordered at the kitchen. It was such a bad quality, we just threw it out.

This is not the first time service has been slow, not at good quality... Just sort out your management. Not that hard. Just do some hospitality training. It is clear this place is managed by...

The staff here do not know how to treat and respect customers. Went here last Saturday evening with some friends, spent a few hours and a fair amount of money on food and drink. Food was great and table service was friendly. Manager had a weird vibe and wasn't too friendly. Problem started when I went outside the front to make a phone call about half ten – when I tried to re-enter after ten minutes or so, they had locked the front door. My belongings, half a pint, and 4 friends were inside. Called them and they asked the staff to let me back in, they refused and said they were closing in 20 minutes. (There'd been no indication of closing this early and that I wouldn't be let back in if I went outside). Basically seems like they'd got spooked by the prospect of being over run by revellers exiting a local day festival that was finishing at half ten. Kind of fair enough, but they could have dealt with it a lot better – after spending a whole evening's worth of money at the bar it's pretty upsetting to get locked out in the rain, especially when all your stuff is inside! Staff were rude and uncompromising towards my friends after this point and the only way I could retrieve my belongings was by my friend bringing it out to me, but they basically pushed him out the door and locked him out as well. Side note, there's a "digital detox" sign on the wall in the pub saying don't be on your phone basically, but "friendly conversation is encouraged" instead. What a load of bull. Don't preach that kinda stuff and then treat your customers like dirt. I wouldn't go back here or recommend...

This pub is terrible. It has to be worst Sam Smith pub I've ever been in and was a total letdown. After a spot of rockclimbing nearby, a small group of us looked for a pub to have some Sunday afternoon beers and food. Google threw up this pub with rave reviews so it seemed a shoe-in. From the outside I was impressed, it is in an amazing location, right on the river and in the upstairs dining room, you get unparallelled views of the city and river boats.

That's where the positive comments end.

The place had no character inside at all despite the location and usual Sam Smith decor. It felt grubby and quiet, I half expected tumbleweed to roll past. I ordered a bacon cheeseburger and it came in a decent amount of time; however the food was shocking. The bun was so stale it might as well have been sitting out on a wall all afternoon. The salad was limp and mangy, and was clearly not made that day. I took the food back to the bar and told the clueless barmaid who just said, 'do you want a refund then?'. Regretfully I told her that I just wanted my food to be nice and asked for it to be sorted out. 10 minutes later I get the same plate back with a slightly better - but still stale - bun. I couldn't be bothered to go down to the bar again and so I ate it. Upon leaving swiftly after, I was going to complain, but the barmaid seemed so hopeless I didn't have the heart to say that it was awful.

We walked for a few hundred yards and found The Mayflower; which was packed full of people, great selection of beers and good food....
