I like the staff here, though staff satisfaction is more important to the cafe then customer satisfaction.I feel there is no barista training with the coffee, I think its one poor making coffee person teaching another, getting a barista in really could turn around the cold coffee, weak coffee and half filled take away cups. The food could be so good, but the presentation, the take away containers when you are eating in, the small portions at very high prices, are so disappointing. I will say their breakfast bacon rolls are very good. I have been going here for years and feel the decline in the customer service and the quality of the coffee has been most prominent this year. On a visit two or 3 weeks ago, there was 2 front of house staff and one person in the kitchen, my 2 friends and I were the only customers there, I wanted a coffee in and was advised due to having no one in to fill the dishwasher, I had to have it in a take away cup. I did point out the cafe was empty and their was 2 of them, I was stressfully advised that she was on the till and the other person was making the coffee, a third person was required to allow them to use ceramic table ware. I like the staff here, they are never unfriendly or rude, they are mostly new and possibly not being guided in the best way for all in the cafe to have the best experience? The impression given is that they are not there for our service and we are there for their inconvenience. I would hate not to have this cafe, I feel they need a manager with a service background who takes away the staff self management and brings more customer satisfaction focus to the cafe. I am truly only asking for good coffee and an improvement in the customer experience. Staff should be happy at work but not to the detriment of the customer. We go to another cafe now, but wish the cafe a positive change...
Read moreThis fine cafe has become something of a destination in its own right. Proprietor Eileen has created one of the friendliest establishments in the area and serves a wide range of freshly made sandwiches, hot food and delicious cakes, all at sensible prices.
UPDATE at 15 Sept 2018: English Heritage - the owners - intended to close it down. After months of uncertainty which made Eileen's future very doubtful they have been forced by public protest to drop their plans. Now it's up to us all to support this valuable community resource. But will English Heritage recognise Eileen's long and popular service by renewing her contract when the inevitable renovation happens? Let's hope so.
UPDATE at 21 September 2019: Now we know that Eileen will not be retained by English Heritage after Sunday 3 November 2019. This is sad news for those of us who have valued the warmth and community service of her time here. Enjoy it...
Read moreStopped here on a visit to Marble Hill House. Overall very disappointing. Cream tea wasnt up to standard, scone was hard, virtually inedible, no butter and cream didnt spread was flaky, never had flaky cream before, Julian code indicated the tub was packaged 7 weeks previously!? Sourdough cheese and tomato toasties were unappetising, toasted on the outside, barely warm inside. The coleslaw wasnt coleslaw, having no mayonnaise, it was a tiny bit of salad. The tea was passable. The prices were very high for what we had. The floor was very clean on account of someone's little dog hoovering up under the table. Toilets were ok, room for improvement. The lady who took our order was very pleasant. One of the worst experiences we have had foodwise, so we wont be coming again, however the visit to Marble Hill House was lovely, very enjoyable, just take...
