šĀ Bethnal Green šŗĀ Ā£6.40 Studio Lager
The Dundee Arms is located opposite legendary boxing venue The York Hall in Bethnal Green in the East End of London. The nearest Tube is Bethnal Green.
There has been a pub on this site since the late 18th century, the pub you see today was built in the 19th century. There are some stunning Victorian tiles by the entrance.
This is a good size one bar pub that is traditionally decorated with some contemporary touches here and there. The servery is located on the left and stretches down the length of the main bar area. The decor consists of exposed brick and cobalt blue panelled walls, a bare boarded floor, some beautiful artworks and two long dimpled banquettes. There are some interesting features to the pub, there is a nice collection of Toby Jugs, some detailed woodwork and I loved the James Brown poster. At the rear of the pub is an intimate beer garden with a heated snug.
The beer choice is excellent and offers a selection of beers from local London breweries including one cask ale by Hackney brewery @fivepointsbrew . I decided on a Studio Lager, my pint hit the spot, price point was a tad above average. The food offering is @yardsalepizza who deliver your pizza to the pub.
We arrived at 12pm on a chilly Saturday lunchtime in January. We were the first ones in the door followed soon after by six other punters. The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed set to a superb soulful soundtrack. We plotted up on the poser tables by the window and watched the Newcastle v Bournemouth game which was on mute. The service was great, we received a warm and friendly welcome. I got chatting to the owner who is a top fella, we spoke for a bit about all things pub.
The East End pub has become an endangered species, so it was great to see this pub standing tall where so many have been lost. Visiting @thedundeearms was a thoroughly enjoyable experience, I loved the warm hospitality, the comfortable surroundings and the fact that local London breweries were well represented. Get this pub on your āto visitā list.

Read moreThis turned out to be a gem. I was looking for somewhere to eat but failed, and had already walked past the pub. It looked inviting and it was. I was alone, sat at the bar and ordered a pint of Neck Oil. It was very good. It turns out that they do food but, in a stroke of genius, only one thing. It was a cheese toastie with spring onions and truffle oil and it was fantastic. At £5 it was a bargain as well. The beer wasn't super cheap (£5.80 a pint) but that could be my fault for liking things like Neck Oil. I'm guessing that other offerings were cheaper. I ended up talking on the phone to my wife for a very long time, and every time my pint glass was empty it was promptly filled up, my card was swiped using the contactless and I carried on. By the end of the call with my wife I was quite drunk and very content. What a place. Great beer, great service, best food menu ever (I like it simple!). There is an outdoor space at the back as well but I didn't go. It looked nice from...
Ā Ā Ā Read moreWas very disappointed with my treatment at the door of the Dundee Arms this evening. At 9 PM, after 2 drinks I made an attempt to go in with my friends and was stopped by the bouncer to be told that I had had one too many. When I tried to oppose the bouncer's decision and ask why, I was not given a particular reason. I have to flag that I was not stumbling, slurring, abusive or being loud in front of the bouncer... all valid reasons for not letting someone in.
I really hate to say this, and I have never had to do this before... ever.... but I honestly believe that either the bouncer didn't let me in because of the way I looked or because I was gay. Either way, as there was no dress code for the venue, this is not OK.
What further proves my point is that two hours later I witnessed my straight female friend, who was borderline obliterated drunk, walk straight in with no...
