Read moreWhoever heard of turning up to a pre-booked table for dinner and being told upon arrival that you can’t order food because “the kitchen’s too busy?” And let me be clear: we weren't told something along the lines of “there may be a bit of a wait or a delay because we’re very busy tonight.” We were told that “we’ve closed ordering.” Basically we were ‘bumped down’ due to all the Deliveroo orders phoned in half an hour before our arrival and the Goodness Brewery decided to prioritize those orders over and above our 2-day pre-booked reservation. The tiny pizza ‘kitchen’ in one corner is clearly not large enough, or adequately staffed, to cope with takeaway orders as well as the large seating count. Nor are there anything like enough waiting staff. Did we wait to see if the kitchen may or may not re-open? No we did not. And by the way – you can only eat here if you have a mobile phone – since all ordering is via an App which in itself could be argued is discriminatory. And Covid cannot be the excuse since there were laminated pizza menus, but inexplicably no drinks menus. So if you did want anything as exotic as ice in your drink then you probably have to download a separate App for that. It would appear as though the notion of ‘Service’ has been lost in the application-translation. Don’t be fooled just because micro breweries are in vogue. The ‘Goodness’ brewery it...
Read moreGoodness Brewing is a microbrewery in deeply unfashionable Wood Green (London N22). It sells its own excellent beers, lager and pizzas, and has a bar serving other drinks. The deep russet Sunset IPA is a stand-out beer. I'm waiting for a new batch of the 7.4% stout to try out next. Maybe a half at that strength. Pizzas are tasty, handmade and good value: I had an excellent Napoli for under £10. The bar is open Thur - Sun only. Saturday evening was not crowded. Remember Hackney Wick 10+ years ago? Goodness captures that temporary bar-in-an-industrial unit vibe but without the annoying am-I-being-looked-at hipsters. The venue in Wood Green's improbably named "cultural quarter" has zero kerb appeal. Customers have to walk through the business-end of the brewery to get to the bar with its trestle tables and benches. Tower cranes and part-built apartment blocks loom over the 'garden', an area carved out of a high-density housing development site. But it works in an utterly unpretentious way. Visit before...
