🚇 Kings Cross 🍺 £6.20 Moretti ❤️ A Charringtons classic with beautiful tiled exterior. . This pub is located just off Caledonian Road and is a gentle ten minute walk from Kings Cross station. . The Caledonian Road or “The Cally” as it’s locally known once had pretty much a pub on every corner. There used to be twenty pubs on this two mile stretch of road but today only seven survive. . This has to be one of the best examples of a surviving Charringtons signage on a boozer anywhere in London. The maroon tiles that cover this pub are an absolute joy and the owners must be saluted for maintaining this precious piece of London pub architecture. . Although the exterior of this pub retains a lot of it’s original period features, inside it’s a more modern affair. Under some of the windows you can still see the remnants of the interior tile work and also some tiles under a beermat display on one of the walls. At centre of this pub is an island bar which is a great feature in any boozer. The decor also includes exposed brickwork, a nice fireplace and pendant lighting to complete the contemporary feel. . The beer choice was simple with no real ale to speak of, I ordered a Moretti which was north of six quid and a decent enough pint. The menu here is all about burgers, pizzas and sarnies. Roasts are available on Sundays. . The atmosphere was chilled and relaxed on this Saturday afternoon, there was a large group in at the opposite side of the bar and the Guvnor and staff were perched at the back end of the bar. The lady who served me was pleasant and courteous. . @thethornhillarms has stood the test of time and thankfully endures to this day. Whether you’re a pub, architecture or tile enthusiast, you must visit this living part of London pub history. . 📊 Information correct on...
Read moreFrom the outside it's a traditional Victorian pub. But on the inside some utter fool has taken out all of the original features and replaced them with new, but rough-looking wooden planks. Even the doors to the toilets are like this. The "decor" inside the gents is positively weird, but not in a good way. They only had one draught real ale (Doombar) which I don't particularly like, so I had a coffee - which as I was warned, was made with instant from a jar. All of this is sad because the outside seating area is great on a warm, sunny day. We left after one drink. What a disappointment!
Update on 27th April 2019 Thanks for the response Bradley, Fair enough, I appreciate that you may not be responsible for ripping out the original interior. I just feel that we all have a responsibility for preserving the architectural heritage of the city, traditional London pubs especially. The thing that equally disappointed was that only one real ale was on offer, and instant coffee(!) - really? I wasn't offered the option of a quality bottled beer. Perhaps you don't keep any of those in stock. We were there in the mid afternoon so perhaps things improve in the evening. I certainly hope so. Please remember that reviews (well mine at least) are written to point out things that can be improved or remedied. The interior decor is a long term issue and arguably a matter of taste, but limited offerings can easily...
Read moreDisappointed with my experience of this pub at the end of August. Rang up at approximately 7pm to enquire if it was dog friendly as I was going to come for something to eat with my sister who had just moved to the area. Within 45 minutes, at about 7.45pm, we were in the pub and they were not serving food. The man I spoke with on the phone could have easily told me that they were no longer serving, or were shortly stopping but this information was not forthcoming. I presume it was the same guy who was serving on the bar. Who, in my opinion was less than friendly. There was a roaming dog in the pub that kept coming up to my dog (who can be reactive) but mine was on a lead. Nothing was done to control the roaming dog, who I presumed was the owners. We chose to move to sit outside so it was safe for my dog not being confronted by this other dog, while it's owner was on a laptop at a table and showing no control over her dog. The woman left shortly afterwards, so maybe not the owners. Still I feel its unacceptable to let a dog roam like that and upset other customers. Over all a bad experience. Had a pint and a half then left. Wouldn't...
