London | TOAD is worth the trip, despite the distance!

You need to visit this bakery now! So my dear friend suggested I visit Toad Bakery, and I am glad to say I listened to his advice! Oh sweet baby J! You need to take the time to travel out to Peckham for this freaking gem! The pastries my darlings! The pastries are Off. The. Hook! Could you take over the damn world after eating pastries here—maybe!! Or will you be dying in ecstasy after eating yourself into a gorgeous pasty-induced coma—quite possibly! Oh, but what a way to go! If you truly consider yourself a foodie then you had better hustle your booty out to this adorbs hole-in-the-wall! Be prepared to take your treasures with you as there isn’t much in the way of seating. Each pastry is lovingly hand-crafted, flaky and buttery and delicious or filled with cream or custard and filthy gorgeous! I admit (to my shame) that I may have purchase far too many pastries for one small person to reasonably consume! (I have NO regrets!!) With the help of a charming ex-pat Australian gent I picked up an asparagus with wild garlic barrel (the love child of crispy pastry and fresh veggies), everything bagel croissant (I didn’t make it home with this—I may have heard the voice of god herself, it’s almost better than s*#), thinly slice apple tart (divine, I might have heard angels), choco pan (filled with lovely filthy chocolate cream), and a saffron vanilla tea cake (demure at first and then a saucy biatch). I would recommend taking your time, enjoy a ride on the bus, enjoy a slow stroll down to the shop, and then you can feel justified in eating your way to nirvana. I think it would be an understatement to say that I recommend Toad, just give it a try and then you can die happy!

Been seeing a lot of reels on Instagram about this bakery so of course I had to go and try it out myself, being a massive fan of pastries (particularly croissants). I went there during the Easter weekend on the Saturday and got there around half 12. Was very happy to see that there were plenty of pastries available, as I had assumed that it would have been too late since most have been to recently tend to run out of pastries by 12noon. I got a lot of things to go - plain croissant, chocolatine, cinnamon bun, apple & custard Danish and the everything bagel croissant. OMG - literally EVERYTHING was phenomenal! My personal favourite has got to be the plain croissant, the second best I have had in London bakeries so far (after Cedric Grolet)! If you have a look at the cross section from my photo, you can see how well done the lamination was, and it's light, airy and fluffy in the middle and super flaky on the outside. The same croissant dough was presumably used for the bagel croissant and the chocolatine, extremely delicious and high quality! Apple & custard Danish was such a comfort food item for me, mildly sweet and pleasant, obviously super flaky too. Cinnamon bun was also soft and fluffy. The staff member who served me was very nice and friendly. The only down side is that it's a very small shop so there are only outdoor seatings available. So it's more of a grab & go kind of bakery, particularly on rainy days. Overall, I had a really good experience at this bakery and I am DEFINITELY coming back to try all the other pastries!

Absolutely mediocre.

Firstly, positives.. definitely fresh, and good variety and decent pricing.

Now, on to the real review... people are absolutely crazy. The queue? Unjustifiable. Was the food good? No, in that it was lackluster and so mediocre. Pophams, Jolene, Fortitude, Arome.. plenty of places that I've queued and been blown away/been good.

Almond croissant was dense and and stodgy. White chocolate pretzel puck.. where was the bits of pretzel? I liked the sweet to salt balance but overall mid at best. Buttery layers? None existence. Also don't say words like pretzel and then not have that captured within the product. Cheesy kimchi crossiant. So now I realised it was a okay crossiant dough being used. Now to the filling, you want a punch of kimchi and chunks of it.. this lacked a punch, and was so mushy, like baby food.

Overall, this place is definitely overhyped and a mid bakery place at best. Absolutely nothing special.

Coffee sucked! If you're only serving one type of coffee, then make sure it slaps. This filter coffee was terrible.

Service was fine - did a good job.

Just an honest review. Plenty of other places I can justify queuing for. Would I ever come back? A definite no. So mediocre and God knows why people have hyped this...
