I'll address your last point first- please spare me the amateurish analysis and don't assume any anger on my part, but simply take the criticism and disillusionment as what it is.
I'm well aware that the word 'artisan' has long lost its true meaning, which was reserved for trained artists and skilled craftspeople, never chefs. Using the term only serves to make your business sound more elitist, or conversely, appeal to a certain type of customer, just as your quirky, and I'm being diplomatic, name for the business doesn't appeal to me but may do to others.
There are many great bakeries in London which let their products do the talking and would never dream of calling themselves artisans, despite doing everything with traditional methods, ingredients and by hand.
Irrespective of whether your prices haven't risen in 5 years, they are significantly higher than the majority of bakers in Walthamstow, speaking as a local guide.
Thank you for your attempt to placate my non-existent 'anger at society', as you call it, and perhaps one day I'll take you up on the offer of a coffee, but for now I'm happy with a tea, gingerbread man and artisanal white split tin loaf from Percy Ingles.
My advice to you as a small business is to engage with the whole community, not just the middle class customers who can afford your food and who have become your regulars. Hugely overpriced and over-hyped self-proclaimed 'artisan' bakery, perpetually full of annoying customers, as are most shops in Walthamstow nowadays. On a par with 'Perky Blenders' as the most awful name for a hipster business in...
Read moreHi Alex, thanks for responding and looking into it. Unfortunately, I can't remember when exactly this was, or even who the staff were; and I don't really want to get anyone in trouble. Maybe some just need training, but at the same time, you can't fake it. And a couple of the staff just look like they're doing community service. I still go there sometimes for bread, but not for anything else, and that'll change when some other place opens up, because why should I be loyal to a place that doesn't care for my business. And I'm really not hard to please. So hope you can nip this, because at least you seem to care. And while you're at it, why do you keep running out of everything by midday? :) .....
I live round the corner, so I drop in for bread and toasties fairly often. Usually, it's the standard friendly service, but lately I've had a few really poor experiences. First, I was kept waiting at the counter at a time it wasn't busy at all for an exceptionally long time when staff wasn't busy. I said something about that to the till operator and next thing I know, I go home and find half of order (couple of toasties) not included despite being charged full amount. Next time I go in, nearing closing time, only few people seated while staff cleaning. Again, kept waiting at counter for about 5 mins while two staff have a nice chat right in front. Studiously ignoring me. I politely cough to get attention. Looks at me and continues conversation. I waited till they were done, expecting one to come over, but they go about other work. I had to finally call out really loudly and say, Hi! May I have some service? Ridiculous. And one less regular family of...
Read moreWhat does friend mean for you?😊 Based on copain, the French word for friend means "with bread", because a friend is supposed to be someone you share bread with, similar to the word compagnon in English.😉
