Had a lovely evening at Toff's last night and I'm pleased to say it lived up to expectations. We were a party of four and thoroughly enjoyed our meal. The food was spot on - the scampi was beautifully cooked and the fried cod was absolutely delicious. For pudding, the sticky toffee was divine and the semifreddo was a perfect way to finish the meal. The calamari rings were perfectly fine, though nothing particularly special - still enjoyable, just not memorable.
What really made the evening was the service. Our waiter was absolutely brilliant - attentive without being overbearing and genuinely seemed to care that we had a good time. It's refreshing to find staff who actually seem to enjoy their job.
The bill came to around £120 for the four of us (before tip), and we didn't have any alcohol, so do factor that in if you're planning to drink. I thought it was quite reasonable for the quality. I'd definitely recommend booking ahead though, especially if you're planning to go towards the weekend as they do get rather busy.
A couple of practical notes: there's street parking available but do allow a bit of extra time to find a space during busy periods. I believe parking becomes free after 7pm in the evenings, though I'd suggest double-checking the exact times. The restaurant has both upstairs and downstairs seating areas. Whilst it is wheelchair accessible, the space between tables can be a bit snug, so it might be worth mentioning any accessibility requirements when you book.
All in all, I'd happily recommend Toff's and we'll certainly be back. A proper good meal with...
Read moreI decided that a hard day working on an upcycle project and a few extra pounds from the sale of a item, I deserved a treat. I have been a resident of N10 for just over a year, I had noticed folks eating chips and Toffs looked the place to treat myself to Cod and Chips. I know fresh cod is now a luxury food. So at £13 it's should be a deliciously satisfying meal.
Ordered cod and chips for one. No more than a minute from ordering I was being asked did I want salt and vinegar. Being asked was unusual I would have preferred to add salt and vinegar myself, so I declined and add them when I get home.
The fish portion was good but a tail end and the portion of chips would've fed 3 people. Putting the fish onto the plate a big piece of batter stuck to the paper and the chips stuck together as a soggy mess.
But with the worse piece of cod I have eaten in front of me I felt robbed. I tried to find a portion of fish that was melt in the mouth cooked but dried, chewy and tasteless was what £13 buys you at Toffs of Muswell Hill, If a fish restaurant/takeaway can't serve correctly cooked fish then it's trading under false pretences. Anyone who has cooked fish knows it cooks quickly and continues to cook after removing from heat. A professional cook will know the timings whatever the cooking methods. Obviously not a professional operator.
If you are thinking of using Toffs you should insist that your fish is shown to you and cooked as you wait. Then check it is cooked well, if the staff don't do as you requested then they don't deserve your custom or to be...
Read moreIt was one of those times last night where at 62 I was conscious of the years passing. I had last been here prior to Covid when the original Owner was still alive and I had heard word of things not being the same and standards having declined . Owing to the Nautilus still being closed I decided to make a booking and as I parked the Porsche out front and approached the front door I was a bit nervous . There were a dozen people waiting at the counter and the restaurant was busy too . I was almost an hour early for my booking but we were still allocated a table . I noted the fish ready cooked piled high in the hot plate but it was disappearing as fast as it was cooked . I had the Scampi starter which was excellent followed by Haddock and Chips which again were excellent . Justin my Electrical Engineer had Plaice and Chips followed by Homemade Tiramisu all again excellent and we washed this down with a couple of bottles of Keo Beer . Sitting back afterwards enjoying one of the nicest white coffees I have ever had I wondered why I had believed all the talk of declining standards . I have to tell everyone that Toffs are still at the top of their game and I literally couldn't fault the service or the food for it was truly outstanding . Walking outside I glanced at Sweaty Betty next door and thought of all the money I had wasted splashing out on this girlfriend and that sadly all gone now but the memories remain . September of my years indeed . Thanks Toffs , Yanni at the Nautilus is going to see me less often , it was...
