We didn't bother getting any starter dishes. Instead we got a few things to share from the rest of the menu.
Our favourites were the truffle beef and the black cod from the main course options.
The pork belly and chicken katsu baos were the least impressive and not worth bothering with. You get a rather thin slice of pork belly in the bao. The ratio of meat to bun is off. Normally you'd get a proper slab slice of pork belly in a bao, so it feels quite miserly. The chicken katsu bao bun was nothing out of the ordinary.
We also got some sushi rolls- el diablo lobster roll (ok, but not everyone was sure they got lobster in each piece), volcano roll (liked this the most of all of them, very nice sauce), soft shell crab (okay) and Yamamomo special (lots of pieces of fish like salmon, tuna and yellowtail, good but not omg this is so special).
They have a number of cocktails, but we didn't order any drinks.
Overall the food and service was not bad. A couple of dishes stood out. Nothing overly negative to say about the rest. Our server (Josue O it says on the receipt) was lovely. We liked the atmosphere and music. They were decorated for Halloween when we went.
It wasn't busy on a Tuesday evening in October. We did have to book a very early dinner slot as we were using First Table, but we left around the start of the usual dinner service and only a few tables were taken. Not out of the ordinary given the time of week.
The total was £168 for 8 dishes between 4 people. With the first table discount (50%) it came to £84 plus a suggested service charge of 12.5% was added. So, it's obviously outstanding value when you use first table (the whole menu is open for you to choose from, which is marvellous). They offer their own discounts if you're not on first table, like an early bird offer and happy hour.
To be honest their current average rating (4.4) is on the money. I've given a 5 because of the value after discount rather than the quality. Without that I would probably have given them 4 stars.

Read moreA group of us booked here for a much needed catch up after a really stressful time at work as teachers. When we arrived we informed the manager AJ that despite we had originally booked for 4 there would be more of us coming which he said was fine. However, despite ordering drinks and preparing to order food he came over shortly after and said the table next to us was not available. We queried this based on his previous reassurance and he could not give a proper answer as to when customers were due. He then brought a walk in customer to one of the tables despite the fact we were using it and spending a lot of money on drinks (we had given up on food at this point as he had made us feel unwelcome) and then blamed us for the customer leaving. This was a clear contradiction as he had said the tables were booked yet was offering them to walk ins despite the fact we were offering our custom. When more of our party arrived as pre warned he told them they could not be accommodated despite the fact there were multiple empty tables and he refused them access which was extremely demeaning. We decided to leave and give our custom to Megan's across the road which was extremely welcoming and accommodating. This was a really disheartening experience and there was no clear reason as to why we were made to feel unwelcome and no effort made by AJ to accommodate us or make us feel comfortable. I previously was a regular visitor but now myself and my colleagues will not be returning here despite being local to the area and would advise against this place if you are a non white person or group who would like to feel welcome somewhere. We paid the bill in full but asked for the service charge to be removed due to the inhospitality which they queried which again showed the lack of self awareness. It is such a shame as I used to think highly of this place and was a regular patron. After this experience I would not recommend it and will not be returning and at least we know how the management and service...
Read moreThis is a long overdue review of a firm family favourite we have been coming to on a regular basis since opening 6 years ago. This is a fantastic and friendly Japanese fusion restaurant in the heart of East Dulwich offering superb value of expertly cooked and sushi and sashimi dishes of a similar, and some better quality, than big name central London restaurants such as Roka and Nobu. We have our firm favourites to start such as nasu goma (succulent and sweet with miso), katafi prawns (large, juicy and crisp with a rice noodle wrap), chicken gyoza (flavoursome and cooked to perfection with just the right amount of bite and crispness to the wrap) and snow crab shu mai (packed full of flavour). For main course can thoroughly recommend Teriyaki rib eye medium rare (the sauce is rich and buttery and the vegetables - carrots, park choi, spring onion, brocolli all have a slight bite to them and cooked perfectly), my favourite is the lamp cutlets (pink) which have the perfect spicing and are completely delicious. For dessert my daughter can thoroughly recommend the ice cream mocha or chocolate fondant which is rich and gooey in the middle. Not had on this occasion but can also recommend the black cod or any of the nigiri or sashimi. As I said we have maybe been her 30-40 times and the quality is always excellent and of the same standard on each visit. There was one little dip around 9 months ago when I think they changed supplier for the prawns and gyoza skins. When we pointed this out to the excellent and always friendly Manageress, Galina, she took the items off the bill without question. The staff may have changed over the years but they are friendly, efficient and always there when needed, but not overbearing - like Galina who is excellent. Will be back soon and sorry it has taken so long to review. Keep up...
