I’m told my experience is a rare one and more a reflection of staff on site at the time. I took a friend out for some food last night, he suggested the Bishop. My friend ordered the drinks and his food then I ordered mine. The drinks were fine, and the food came out. Unfortunately, my burger was missed, even though I had said plant based burger, which my friend walking away heard. Regardless the food was missed. Rather than an genuine apology, the supervisor on shift, firstly said sorry but it was missed, then said my staff member had told him that I had not said about the burger and that he read the order back which he did not. Neither being the case. Your supervisor put a discount on as he could see that I was not happy about this scenario and I thought my plant based burger was put through. This is where I get lost because after the supervisor said we read back orders which he then did not do. I was served a meat burger. Being so hungry I tucked in and realised the taste. I’ve asked the waiter and was told what I already knew. Unbelievable the discussion I had with the supervisor was not an apology but he was adamant that I had not said plant based. This might come as a surprise but to be veggie in a world that is my you have to be clear about what you mean. I know what I order, mainly because this had never happened in the time I have been veggies. The supervisor then begrudgingly returned the payment for my meal and my friends, which in hindsight should have been the whole bill. I’ve not eaten meat in over 7 years and. I was incredibly sick due to the incident. The lesson to take from this is imagine if it were an allergy or a view based on a religious belief. There would be no argument to have had in the case of someone with allergies. Regarding having a discussion about these things to the customer. The client is the most important aspect of a business, it looks so unprofessional to be telling the client about what a staff me member has told a supervisor about a mistake. Deal with your business in house and between yourselves. Even if the customer were wrong, you are only catalysing an argument, creating bad feeling and spurring them to write this. I would never had written this if you had been a little more understanding and apologetic as I was very upset about what I had eaten, which once again made...
Read moreI just want to preface this by saying most of the staff here are absolutely lovely and a credit to The Bishop. Being the closest pub to my house, me and my partner came here regularly, at least once a week. However, Now we won’t be coming back at all.
I came in a week or so ago to be greeted with the rudest staff member I have ever encountered, an oldish gentleman with long hair tied up in a bun. I asked him for a Bloody Mary, he looked at me blankly and just said “no”. I chuckled as I thought he was having a laugh, then he proceeds to tell me that he simply “can’t be arsed” to make that and that I should just order a beer. Puzzled, I shake it off and ask for a Guinness instead. He pours the drink, and decides, while he slides it over to me, to ID me- which as any bartender worth their salt knows is a question you’d ask before taking a drink request and pouring it. I produce my ID and he hands me my drink. The vibe was completely unprofessional, as if he was letting some personal prejudice get in the way of him doing his job.
I go up to the bar about 15 minutes later and a youngish lad takes my request for a Bloody Mary with a smile, no questions asked.
Fast forward to today, I thought I’d go in for Sunday lunch. Now, the opening hour listed for Sunday is midday, however I arrived at 12:20 with the front entrance locked. I peer in and see this same long haired man, who simply glares at me through the glass and walks off.
A truly remarkable combination of unprofessional service, failing to open on time, and refusing to make a drink because he...
Read moreJuly 2025. Food is delicious and more adventurous than most pub menus. For starters, The spicy baked Camembert and the Korean chicken were tasty and generous sharing portions. The smoked trout mango wasabi combination was delicious (more mango would be good). The lobster thermidor was a bit heavy on the mustard (or radish not sure which, but it was too strong and so could only barely taste the lobster). For mains, the flat iron steak was cooked just right, carmellised and succulent. The battered fish was light and crisp, with beautiful white flaking fish inside. Burger with bacon was really good, two thin (smashed?) crispy burger patties, I tend to prefer a thicker succulent burger but I know the thin smashed patties are more trendy at the moment, and this one was good. the chips were great, the fries were a little pale and underdone. Pie of the day was DUCK !!!! Never had duck pie before. It was soooo goooood! It came with mash and braised cabbage which were both delicious. Went at lunchtime on a weekday, not busy, maybe 15 customers. Service was excellent. The front bar has standing tables and high stools, great for stand-up drinking and chatting. The back half is set up for dining. Overall, really good food, much better than expected and way more interesting than the average pub menu. Would...
