🚇 Mile End 🍺 £6.50 Madri
The Young Prince is located halfway down Roman Road in Bow in the East End of London. The nearest Tube is Mile End.
This pub was built in 1869 by East End brewery Charringtons. The pubs small facade means you need to keep an eye out when you walk down Roman Road because blink and you’ll miss it.
This is a long and narrow one bar pub that has a low beamed ceiling. The servery runs down the left hand side and is a good size in proportion to the size of the bar. The narrow bar area stretches back a long way leading to small open space where there is a TV and Dartboard. The decor is traditional with dark wood panelling, black exposed rafters, an eclectic mix of bric-a-brac, a variety of memorabilia, trophies and a fish tank. At the back of the pub is a compact patio beer garden which blooms in the warmer months.
The beer line up was straight up familiar brands but no cask. I decided on a pint of Madri, my pint was ok, price point was above average. The pub doesn’t serve food but there are plenty of bar snacks to choose from.
I arrived around 2pm on a chilly Saturday afternoon in February. The pub was quiet with one other punter in attendance. There atmosphere was laidback, I had a brief chat with the Guv’nor Barry who is a bit of a character and doesn’t pull any punches. I also spoke with the other punter who turned out to be a Google reviewer. I plotted up at the end of bar to enjoy my pint and watch the Leicester v Arsenal game.
I last visited here in December 2023 and it is safe to say not much has changed. This pub is one of the last remnants of the old East End with an oldschool Guv’nor that has seen it all in his forty years pulling pints here. This pub, like it’s Guv’nor is full of character and well worth a visit if you’re in the area.

Read moreThe landlord here has a serious attitude problem. I lived in the local area and for a while this was my go-to place for watching the Arsenal games. I would always buy something at the bar out of courtesy (even if I wasn't drinking I'd buy a soft drink or something). One day I stopped in to the pub, it was extremely busy and there was only one woman tending at the bar while the fat landlord was sitting on the other side of the counter. The lady really seemed to have her hands full so I thought I would leave it a while until I ordered. Then the fat landlord came over and ushered me out of where I was standing with his high chair and went on a speil about how much he pays for his Sky licence and suggested that I was free looting by not buying a drink. This really pissed me off given I had been going here quite regularly prior to this. He was never very pleasant to begin with so perhaps I shouldn't have expected any different from him.
If you're looking for friendly service, you won't find it here as long as this pathetic fat loser is...
Read moreHaving been to the Young Prince a number of times and enjoyed the classic pub atmosphere and decor, I was both saddened and shocked to hear the landlord openly shout an an awful racist term at the TV when a football game was on. Not only did no one seem to care about this, but when confronted the landlord continued to insult the player in question in vile language (Marcus Rashford by the way, how can anyone put dirt on his name...). Not one bit of remorse from a man who is supposed to represent a pub at the center of the multi-cultural roman road community. I will never return to the pub and I implore all others with a sense of decency to do the same. Its one thing for friends of mine to feel unwelcome and judged at this pub, its another to see that behind that the stares lies deep rooted prejudices and hatred. Shame on Baz and all those who condone...
