La Farola — Restaurant in Mid Sussex

We visited La Farola for the first time recently, following several recommendations from local people who we know.

We enjoyed a great tapas meal and a very pleasant evening overall, the staff are friendly and the food excellent and reasonably priced.

Quite a few visitors to the restaurant had come in just for drinks at the bar or at a table, whereas others, like us had come for dinner in the restaurant. One of the best things about tapas is that you can create a light snack, a full meal or anything in between and this seems to be one of the main attractions of La Farola.

We chose our tapas dishes with some guidance from our waiter who was very friendly and knowledgeable. The restaurant was clean and the Spanish-themed decor helps to create a relaxed atmosphere.

This is the second time I have visited La Farola. I would give it a 3 and a half if I could but not a 4, so decided on 3. The reason? Well, the staff are friendly enough and the food is OK. In other words I found it good enough but nothing more than that. No dish out of the selection of tapas we had stood out for me but none of them were bad either. The restaurant itself is pleasant enough and spacious which isn't surprising given the continual expansion over the years. But at the same time when in there I am not inspired. It's, well, nice. Lovely buzzing atmosphere, but food left a lot to be desired. The atmosphere was great and felt a lot like a pub/bar. The "tapas" restaurant was the least Spanish food I've ever had. The fish platter, which was especially requested, was tasty, but not even included on the tapas set menu. The tapas included two Russian salads? How that belongs in Spanish cuisine I'm not sure.
