The Lockhart Tavern — Restaurant in Mid Sussex

We were trying somewhere new for a change. Trip advisor gave good reviews. What a lovely place. The staff were very friendly and the food was good. There were only 2 chefs but they managed extremely well getting plates out as the tavern was full to capacity! We had the Camembert starter followed by steak. My husbands rib eye was perfect - medium rare, tasty and tender. Sadly mine was very undercooked. They kindly reflashed the steak and it came back medium rare. But maybe it was the supplier as it was a tough cut of rib eye. Hard to cut and hard to chew. There was no problem at all with returning the steak. It was disappointing as my husband gave me a couple of slices while I was waiting for my replacement meal. His was delicious and I really wanted steak. I had the chicken wings instead. This is in our opinion not their fault at all. The only reason I am mentioning it as they graciously did not charge for my meal at all. The steak meal was £29. This did compensate a little to the fact I was eating my meal with my husband having finished his. That was very kind, thank you Lockhart Tavern. The wonderful young lady looking after us that evening was very sweet and asked us if we would be coming back! I must say the burgers that leave the bar looked incredible. So next time we are dining in Haywards...

booked a table for 8people for 2hrs & 30mins today 14/06/19 and as we were enjoying our lovely meal(well done chefs) and as my group was chatting one blonde grumpy rude staff approached our table telling us to keep it quiet and turned her back straight away, my friends and myself are shocked as she made us felt like we are the only loud group/diners at that time which is NOT the case!!! then another staff came and started rushing us even though 4 of us still eating,then came back again and again and again asking questions and continues to clear our table as if we have already past our time slot which is not the case again we only been in for 1hr and still have 1hr & 30mins left and the place is not even full up, my friends and i felt discriminated as we are the only coloured skin as we haven't done anything wrong or inappropriate behaviour. It is ashame that the 2 staff (1st-wiv tattoos and 2nd wiv blonde hair and thick make up on that doesn't smile) ruined our 2 birthday celebrants day....you may have a great food but the way we've been treated was not acceptable. AND NOTE THIS IS OUR FIRST AND LAST ON THE LOCKHART TAVERN AND WILL NOT BE RECOMMENDING IT TO...

We called up and managed to get squeezed in for a last minute Sunday roast. Upon arriving, they quickly noticed I was on crutches and managed to sort out a table for us in the dining area to save me from using the bar stools. We were served by Matt who was an absolute star, so attentive, friendly and perceptive. I ordered the 3 course set menu as I had been recommended the Korean chicken wings and I am so glad I tried them. They were delicious!! My partner tried some of mine and Matt noticed and brought over a small plate for her too. Best wings we have ever had!!

Selection of drinks was lovely (including a good choice of non standard soft drinks), and refreshing to see half pints being offered at 50% of a full pint, so great for trying a few of their fantastic local selection.

I had the roast beef and my partner had the pork belly. Neither of us have had a roast as good as this in a very long time! Both the beef and the pork were cooked to absolute perfection.

Nothing was too much effort for Matt who made us feel incredibly welcome. The food and service were fantastic. Thank you Matt, the chefs and all of the other waiting staff for a wonderful...
