La Campana is a very welcome find, and I will certainly be returning in the very immediate future.
Firstly, the food quality was excellent - we had 6 tapas dishes - and their range is impressive - all of which were cooked in a very, rustic non-chain restaurant manner. It would be easy to think that this restaurant would certainly be at home in a Madrid side-street - genuinely Spanish home cooked style food with excellent flavours and range. My daughter, fussy as she can be, ate literally every dish that was put in front of her which ranged from Albondingas, Chorizo, and even Gambas...and that was due (as she put it) to how they "smelled" as it was too tantalising for her to not attempt the dishes.
Alongside the food the service is what really set this place apart. Miguel and his crew were not just serving us - they were interacting with us and more particularly, my daughter in the sense that they were never too busy to explain the menu and what the dishes were and were keeping her involved in all the decisions being made at the table. Even to the point where, after my daughter ordered the Churros for desert, and they saw that she enjoyed it so much, Miguel brought over an Ipad for her and loaded a video which showed her how easy they were to make...which was fantastic (although there is another chore I need to add to my list)..
Finally, when the bill arrived - I was extremely surprised at how reasonable it was. I have long understood that singular, family orientated, fresh cooking style restaurants tend to be on the pricier side of the market. This however, was not at all.
I would thoroughly recommend La Campana to anyone thinking of having a taste of Spain of an evening. I shall certainly look forward to...
Read moreI am Spanish and have been working as a chef for 20 years. Enter the site to try it and see how it goes. I ordered the potato omelette, the croquettes and the fried calamari. The omelet was dry, and the eggs were very cooked, even more than a scramble egg. Obviously, it has nothing to do with a Spanish omelette, and it is obvious that it is frozen, and if it is not, the chef should be in jail. The frozen ones from Tesco are better. The croquettes had very floury bechamel, and the creaminess was conspicuous by its absence. and the squid, obviously, are frozen. I understand that it is difficult to find fresh here in the UK, but you can eat them frozen in good quality and then work them well. These in question were not like that. It was evident that they came already cut because all the pieces were the same size. when the owner/manager asked me, I told him the truth and he got offended. In fact, he told me "I think you haven't eaten in Spain." He also told me that people go there to eat the croquettes because it's what they like the most, and I wonder: if your croquettes are so good and famous, why only Do you sell a flavor??? why do you offer more variety??? simply because they are garbage. I honestly felt a little offended, because the quality is depressing and they just want to empty people's pockets. often without shame. I am very tired of the Spaniards who come here to set up businesses and serve junk food thinking that the English are idiots and will pay them for everything. We had to find the table ourselves, we had miserable service with a rude and arrogant person at the highest level, and even so, they charged us 10% service charge!!!!! What a shame for a...
Read moreI first went to this restaurant in 2018 and it was excellent, I have raved about it to my husband since. Our 2nd experience was far from excellent unfortunately. The restaurant is very tired now and the toilets weren't great, needs a bit of a refurb. I'm sure the tables had table cloths before but now your greated with a bare tables white plate, knife and fork and white napkin...very basic canteen feel. The food was ok but far from excellent. The prawns were barely cooked and we had raw chicken screwers, which we had started eating when we noticed. They were very good about it and apologied and offered to replace it. They gave us a round of free drinks but didn't take it off the bill and still charged us 10% service charge...so didn't really sit well with us. I'm not sure we'll rush back which is...
