Hello I was in this pub a few weeks ago. I will give a little backstory so you understand how truly beautiful my experience here was… I haven’t been to a pub in over 6 months since my wife Sandra passed away as we used to go into a pub every week from the age we turned 17 all the way to our 40’s. I was feeling extremely low and was thinking about ending it all so I decided to go to a pub for one last drink for Sandra. I got there and ordered a wainwright amber, one of your workers her name was I believe Haj asked me if I was okay, I have no idea how she noticed as I was trying to put a front on best I could but must of just knew, I said I was okay thankyou then she started talking to me I was asking her about what she does, bare in mind I’ve barely spoke to my wife’s friends or family and this young lady had me talking for such a long time. She was telling me all her aspirations, what she’s doing at uni etc and I just stopped for a second and for the first time in 6 months I cried and instead of her being irritating like everyone else she just smiled and said sometimes we need to just get it out, I was bewildered she was being so supportive of me without even realising, she was extremely professional and did her job whilst keeping me company. From that moment on I realised there is so much more to life and maybe communicating with others can be fun. Since then I’ve gone out and met many people, joined groups to help me through the pain. She doesn’t know it but that young lady saved my life. I hope and pray this finds the right people because by god you have an angel...
Read moreThis pub has gone totally down hill. Went in for pre drinks for my fiancées birthday. Drinks prices kept changing despite buying the same and less, the prices didn't go down but up. Tried charging for a generic ale £5.70, they said it was a craft beer, it was not, I complained and got £1.00 back which they took out of the tip jar to make me feel bad. What really did it was my partner is pregnant so she isn't drinking but ordered a coke on the last round. She noticed something in her drink and it was the nozzle from the coke tap in the bottom of the glass, I used to work in bars and these get dirty and don't get rinsed throughout the day. I complained again, the 2 women who were clueless about the pricing had left thankfully but younger lad understood and sorted put free round of drinks, this person was the only saving grace of the pub. On a side note this pub is aimed at students now so expect lots of them , not the older crowd you used to get also thd toilets are still disgusting after these few years, if you need to go , go to the next pub, no lock on the gents upstairs and someone had urinated all over the toilet roll on my second trip to...
Read moreI brought my family to visit “the oldest pub in Newcastle” and was really disappointed with the experience. The service felt rushed and unwelcoming from the start. When we approached the bar, the bartender allowed another customer to push in ahead of us, then hurried through our drinks order without much care.
We asked several times for a bowl of water for our dog, but it took four attempts before our request was understood. Eventually, another staff member gave us a takeaway tub, which would have been fine, except it hadn’t even been cleaned, with oily residue still inside. Not exactly ideal for a dog’s water.
When the rain forced us inside, the atmosphere wasn’t much better. The music was so loud and club like that it drowned out conversation, which felt out of place for 2pm in a historic pub. While the décor itself was charming, the overall experience was far from what we hoped for.
If you’re looking for a pub with genuine character and welcoming service, I’d suggest...
