At first glance, the castle does;t really feel like a castle. What would've been a continuous is split in two buildings bisected by a railway and with the ruins of th parts of the castle in between. At the black gate was one of the main entrances into the old castle and is now where tickets are purchased. There’s a small shop and a nice small exhibition about the castle and the history of the area. The other building, what’s left of the castle feel more like a large keep and requires a climb up some steep steps to enter. It was kind of difficult to navigate around the castle sometimes with no clear route laid out. I actually quite enjoyed it in some ways because it let me wander about and really get a sense of how hard it would’ve been to navigate back in the day. The important rooms of the castle are all labeled with text giving explanatory notes. The tower at the top of the castle provide panoramic and spectacular views of the city and all the iconic landmarks of Newcastle such as the Tyne, High Level and Millennium bridges and St. Nicolas Cathedra too. Keep in mind the castle visit is split in 2 discontinuous buildings and remember to buy your ticket at the Black Gate first to avoid having to double back.
I bought my ticket online before going, to make it that bit easier (or so I thought). I got there and proceeded to enter the keep...... The welcome and service wasn't all that, I showed my QR code execpting it to be scanned which didn't happen. Instead I was given an card with my membership on for a year. I then had to ask about the audio part (which I'd paid for), to be told that would be somewhere in the email which I received when I booked. I also booked and paid for paperback guidebook, which I didn't receive, an couldn't be bothered to ask the assistant who clearly couldn't be bothered, which this is where I've marked it down for..... The castle keep itself was canny good, lots of interesting posts about the history of it. Well lit and plenty of grab rails on the stairs. Unfortunately some guests have left litter around, which is just sitting there. The views from the top are fantastic to say the least, from likes of the bridges over the tyne, central station, to St James's Park and Greys monument..... The pass last for 1 year fron the date of purchase, so plenty of opportunities to nip back for further visits 😀
I gave it 4* instead of 5 only because it doesn't have all the things you would normally get at a castle but then again may be I should change it to 5 as it does have it's very own railway. Right through the middle. The London to Edinburgh line goes through the castle. On one side of the tracks is the Black Gate and on the other is the Great Hall. Personally I like a bit of quirky and as I often enjoy a steam train ride while on holiday a few trains adds to the experience for me. Both sections of the castle are very well presented with lots of historical information and interesting displays. It's worth remembering that the toilets are on the Black Gate side so plan accordingly. The thing that is missing is the cafe and the stroll in the grounds (you would be on the railway tracks if you went strolling). As the castle is only a 10 minute walk from the city center the lack of a cafe is no problem or you can walk a little further to the Baltic art centre which has an excellent restaurant and finish off with a stroll around the galleries.
A great piece of Newcastle's history preserved here. The city aquires it's name from the New Castle built here in 1080 from earth and wood, subsequently replaced by stone. The Keep has seen many uses over the years, the cellar being used as a rather grim prison in the 17th Century, as a storage area and latter air raid shelter. This place is lucky to survive the advent of the railways in the 1840s which split the Garth (Black Gate) from the Keep and destroyed many of the buildings in between. Trains run very close to the Keep and in fact if you climb to the top of the tower, it's a trainspotters paradise with a birds eye view of trains coming and going from the central station. The tower gives you one of the best 360 degree views of Newcastle, better than the Baltic viewing gallery on firth floor which is unidirectional and a little further out from the centre. The Black Tower museum is well worth visiting as it charts the history of the Garth which was like a town within a town.
This is a beautifully conserved castle! We visited two locations of the castle. The smaller location contained museum exhibitions on how the castle was used overtime and some things that were found on site. The larger location had a bit of a hidden entrance, but it was absolutely amazing. You could walk through the castle and explore its history through the many mazelike corridors and chambers. There were signs everywhere which nicely explained what each room would've been used for. The top of the castle also offers an amazing view of the city! There are a lot of stairs though, so if you have difficulty walking, I'd recommend sticking to the smaller location as there is an elevator available there. Also, if you buy an entree ticket, this is valid for a whole year.
