We had our best meals during a six day and night visit to Wales at The Bell Inn, a charming 17th century coaching inn serving updated versions of traditional pub food.
Two "foodies" from the U.S. ate two of three dinners here while visiting southeast Wales, using Caerleon as a base. It would have been three nights if we hadn't wasted the first night at an overpriced a la carte restaurant at our hotel.
The attached menu doesn't show our best dinner - grilled lamb breast with a delicious herb sauce, grilled artichoke hearts, and grilled gem lettuce (lightly topped with breadcrumbs and parmesean). Fantastic.
SAVE ROOM FOR DESERT!
Service at The Bell was every bit as excellent as the food.
There was a nice restaurant area adjacent to the pub. A nice mix of folks enjoying themselves. Local folks clearly know and appreciate the spot. If it wasn't a bit off the beaten path, I bet it would be a tourist destination.

Read moreOn the way back from Pembrokeshire to Bath, looked up "pubs to eat" as we were approaching Newport, came across this wonderful pub. We got there and thought, maybe, we would be late for Sunday roast, but it was still going until 4pm. A member of staff named Darian, set us up a lovely spot by the bar, and was superb from then on,with his service, even to the point of holding an umbrella for my mother after the meal, and offering to walk her to the car, a fine example of quality service. I had a Roast lunch of mixed meat and large yorkshire, with vegetables, stuffing and gravy for £11.95. I would say it was the best roast I can ever recall having. If your passing by this place or fancy a trip to eat out, I strongly recommend this establishment. p.s. there is a bit of live music...
Read moreFirst time visiting and lovely atmosphere and two young girls who served us were very friendly and always asked if we needed anything . The started was a nice ,the olive oil with balsamic was lovely but rosemary was a bit over powering for my taste. Main course menu was average and not alot of vegetarian options. The pea and asparagus with brie was simply stunning.
The desserts: we had custard tart with raspberries and chantely cream and it was amazing ,great flavours , presentation lovely but the sorbet on the side i felt wasnt needed ..
The lemon crust was a bit of a let down .. felt very heavy and stodgey and could have been because it was all pushed down in a glass but the flavours were great ,just lemon a bit too bitter for my taste .
Great prices and great...
