I googled fish and chips Newquay and this place popped up, so thought I would give it a go, although really wish I hadn't. Poor customer service, asked for the days special hake advertised on the sandwich board, staff member with greasy bleach blonde hair arguing the toss with other experienced staff about size of hake warrants the special. I couldn't face the prolonged debate as the greasy blonde staff member was obviously new but had an attitude as if she new the ropes already, as other staff continually corrected and mentored her - she clearly did not want me to have the hake! clearly ignoring my wants, so I ordered 3 x cod and chips instead @ £19.20, which she was happy to serve as it made more profit.... I assume, as she didn't care to ask what size fish I wanted and immediately charged me for the medium/large option without asking. Had to wait around 5-10 minutes for the fish, which I didn't mind as I thought nice fresh crisp batter. When they arrived, we went outside to eat them, couldn't face looking at the assistant who clearly only wanted to meet her own agenda. When we opened the wrapping we were greeted to a fair size portion, but on taste we were really disappointed. I had a nice piece of cod however wrapped in a thick piece of tasteless batter and chips so dry they cut the roof of your mouth. How wrong can fish and chips be? they only have two items to get right! Overall poor experience with quantity over quality and staff assistant with poor attitude and limited customer service skills. If you cater for tourists they will come and go, but this was my first and last time visit and not likely to visit...
Read moreFirst time visiting Newquay fistal beach and fancied some fish and chips, had a quick look at the local area to see what is recommended and settled on Flounders.
Arrived to a queue back to the door, a good sign. Didn't take too long before I got to order and looking at the options and prices it's comparable to other fish and chip shops I've been to. Placed an order for regular cod fish, jumbo sausages, large chips and curry sauce. Classic combination.
Service with a smile and the wait for the food wasn't long especially for a Saturday night, looks to be a decent efficient service, as all the popular items are sitting under the warn lamp but as it's busy it doesn't sit there for long.
Took the food away back to a suitable place to eat and the food was still hot. The batter on the fish is crisp with a satisfying crunch and not too greasy. The cod is a decent size and flaky. Chips were pretty standard, nothing special but nevertheless good enough and a generous portion. Jumbo sausages tasted fine and meaty, I don't think I had many grisle in mine. Curry sauce had a choice of mild or spicy, as the kids were sharing we had the mild, it was a good thickness and tasted just right for little palates.
Really was a good fish and chips would recommend for those...
Read moreMarch 2022: Update Back in Newquay for work and once again we found ourselves craving something normal for a meal in the evening! No choice really, a visit to Flounders for some great food and friendly staff.
We were not let down, the staff are so friendly and everything was cooked fresh. I ordered cod, large chips, spicy curry sauce and a bap. I was stuffed by the end!
Really can't recommend this place enough, pop in and you won't be disapointed! Also as a bonus they even took my company issued AMEX credit card! I've added some new images below too.
Original Post:
Was in Newquay for work and fed up with the standard meals out in Indians/Chinese etc, so we decided to have some fish and chips in Flounders.
We sat in the shop to eat our food and was welcomed by the friendly staff. I ordered a regular cod and large chips with a spicy curry sauce. The fish was like a whale, it was huge. Batter was nice and crispy with lovely chips, the curry sauce was awesome.
My colleagues both enjoyed their food too!
This has to be one of the finest fish and chip experiences I have had, highly recommended if you are in the...
