Husband and I visited the Pavilion Dining Room today with our two young boys. After travelling from Woolacombe, we came across this beautiful spot, and the boys were excited to sit down and have their packed lunch. Due to allergies, we avoid buying food out, so we genuinely didnât notice the sign about not eating outside food.
Unfortunately, the way this was brought to our attention was quite upsetting. Instead of a polite reminder, a staff member addressed us loudly enough for people sitting outside to hear. It felt less like a simple heads-up and more like public shaming. The boys immediately stopped eating, though their lunch bag remained on the table.
When our 2 coffees and 2 brownies arrivedâcosting round ÂŁ20, which felt overpriced for what we receivedâthe staff member serving us appeared visibly annoyed seeing the lunch bag and slammed the cutlery down and started going off on one. This startled our children, who became uncomfortable and just wanted to leave.
The whole experience left us feeling disappointed and unwelcome. As a brown family, I canât help but question whether we were being treated differently. Itâs disheartening to feel this way, especially in such a picturesque and otherwise...

After several times of asking and a reason being given that the front of house was working separately on the tickets that the kitchen, my niece had finished her scone before she received her tea. Having put it down the waitress said âWe had brought you enough hot drinks but as a good will gesture weâve brought you this!â After spending nearly ÂŁ50 on our drinks and snacks I did not appreciate being made to feel like we werenât entitled to the tea and they were doing us a favour! As we left another lady came out with the tickets and said âwe had brought you enoughâ so I again went through the orders and she argued with me in front of a cafe full of people. My niece who by this point was close to tears offered to pay for the tea (despite it having should have come with the scone) -There is not an option on the menu to only have a scone with cream and jam!!!!! Marred the day after a very emotional family weekend visiting where my Mums ashes had...
Read moreVisited one morning. Almost empty except for three other customers. Ordered an ice cream for my 8 year old son, a coffee for my partner and a packet of crisps for myself only intending to stay for 10 minutes before embarking on a longer walk. My 5 year old son just wanted his favourite crips which we'd brought with us. As soon as we'd sat down we were approached and told we weren't allowed to consume any food brought with us. I explained my son wouldn't eat anything from the café and would only be eating one bag of crisps. Also pointed out that we had purchased three items. The lady disappeared and 30 seconds later a stocky man, purporting to be the manager, came and reiterated the point. He pointed at the bag of crisps I was consuming which I'd bought from the café itself. After a brief discussion it was clear we were unwelcome so we left. Fortunately we visited two other cafes during the day which were very welcoming and had no issue with us giving our younger son a snack from our bag. In particular 'No.1 Lynton coffee lounge'...
