Myself and my partner have been regular patrons and advocates for Geisha in Jesmond for a long time now, and whether take away or eating in, have always had some fantastic food that has proven time and again that Geisha wasn't style over substances.
With Geisha closing and opening an Italia and Asia grill in Benton, which is even closer, we were excited to try it out and we were both left disappointed.
I know it's a different restaurant, but a lot of the meals are carried over, this is a good thing. Except the two I would get prior are now no more (the three meats with rice and the prawn and wasabi Bao buns).
Disappointing, but not the end of the world. Shame because they were so good and the best things on the menu for me, personally.
So we ordered the Pork Belly. They didn't have any Pork Belly.
I went with the Burger, my Partner went with the Salt and Chilli Squid (another regular from Geisha), the Prawn Toast (which is incredible and was in Geisha too), a side of fries and some ribs.
The food was nice, but barring the squid it lacked the standard we had come to expect from experiences at the old restaurant.
The burger was quite bland, the bun overly crispy. It was just missing something to elevate it beyond a predictable burger.
The Prawn Toast is absolutely stellar and is worth the hefty price (versus what you would normally pay for Prawn Toast), and continues to be a winner.
The Salt and Chilli Squid was cooked wonderfully, putting to shame some we got from a restaurant in London this week.
The ribs were disappointing. Overly chewy and coated in a slimy sauce which lacked definable flavour. After 2 I was done, they were poor.
I wouldn't recommend the burger or the ribs. The squid is good, the prawn toast is great. But it all tasted very much like it was trying to replicate the previous restaurant but with inferior results. I was just left disappointed by it all.
The server however was brilliant, he looked over the area tucked around the corner without interference or unnecessary presence. There when required and invisible when not. This is how it should be.
Inside it's still very nice, albeit I think it's inferior to the last venue (which was stunning!) Still the same kind of music, albeit felt louder in a lower ceiling space, but thankfully being sat around the corner it lowered the volume a little so we could speak.
Where myself and my partner had to take everyone we knew to Geisha in the past and would go ourselves or order take away, we were both left suitably underwhelmed. It feels like the classic second album situation where you can't match the masterclass...
Β Β Β Read moreI normally do not leave reviews but I decided to put an effort this time to hopefully reach this review to the establishment and help them improve ultimately.
this is our second time to dine in Geisha Asia after a really good experience on our first visit. But our second visit is probably the worst I had encounter on visiting to restaurants. WHY? it boils down to the food served. WE DIDNOT like the food at all. and Definitely NOT WORTH the price we pay.
What is wrong with the food? dumpling duck - the taste is odd. and it has a weird smell. We reported this to our Server and she did apologize though.
rice - its really dry.... you add Β£1.5 for a coconut sprinkle on top. not worth at all. not same quality rice served to us first time went there.
3 meat rice menu - would not recommend this. 3 meats were really dry. we did not finish it at all.
Salt and Chilli Squid - definitely not the same we order first time we went there. their squid this time is round like and really salty. looks and taste like a ready made frozen squid you just buy in the market.
Beef Schezuan - again will not recommend. it was really too sweet.
salt and chili tofu - the tofu itself is not that good quality. again looks and taste like a ready made cheap frozen tofu that we usually bought in the market.
EX Rice Bowl - did not like this at all. meats in there were really dry. again it taste and feels like a meat left overs and cook it to make a fried rice. Prawn though was okay but the rest of the meat - you know what i mean.
NET - we decided that this last visit will indeed be our our last visit to this restauarant. It might be they have a new chef - i do not know. But you still decide if you want to give it a try to this restaurant.

Β Β Β Read moreI was directed to this restaurant by the staff at holiday inn. And rather then sit at the perfectly adequate hotel restaurant I wandered over. Been seated as a 1 wasn't an issue. I browsed the cocktail menu with some great flavour pairings.gin based with thr fresh quince been a standout cocktail. Koi pond for the ingenuity and koi fish transfer on top. Jacopa was a great person to deal with initially. The kimchi beef gyoza were way overcooked. The tuna tatami was magnificently presented and delicious. Wagu maki rolls interesting and very well executed. After his shift finished the other staff looked after us cocktails definitely not an issue. But the biggest disappointment was their interpretation of Hong Kong Roast meats. They need to look at somewhere in Chinatown. Because the roast belly pork which I was looking forward to I asked for extra as a 3 meat dish with char sui roast pork. The roast pork was not roasted was not really frisky lacked any flavour and was pan fried. It was a disservice some might have accepted it but it was not enjoyable 2 bites. I expressed my disappointment at the description and execution. But I had to ask them to take it off the bill wasn't even offered to be removed. This was duly done not sure they were happy. The char sui was OK but lacked any real flavour as well red coloured but nothing remarkable. So the final dish was why plus the gyoza I can only give it 3 stars. Drinks 5 stars. Would I return.. yes for a drink, food I be less enthuastic. If done properly the 3 roast meats are delicious, see three uncles at...
