Always my go-to spot for fish and chips whilst visiting Tynemouth. Tried their takeaway several times but this was my first Marshall’s restaurant experience. There was some confusion in the beginning when we entered the restaurant and queued up behind another group of tourists who we thought were also waiting for a table. We thought this was a natural thing to do since there was no “wait here to be seated” sign outside. However the waitress showed up and told us directly to wait outside because we would crowed the space, and the other group of tourists were waiting inside because they were already offered the table. Well, a little unpleasant but not a big problem. Once we were seated the service immediately came back online. Their fish and chips indeed lived up to their reputation: the thinly battered fish was very crispy and not greasy at all, which came in decent size. I particularly enjoyed their gravy sauce which went well with both the fish and chips.

Visited on a busy Friday night so there was a queue (made worse by several large orders) and have to admit felt the food was rushed, not the cleanest, and some of it left out for a while. Still, we were served by a young gentleman, think his name was Callum? And despite the stress of the rush, was very polite, professional and served really good portions for us. It was a little more expensive than I was expecting to pay (ÂŁ23 for two meals) but the food was still delicious and clean tables outside for use. I'm sure if we visited at a less busy time, it would be 5 stars.

Disappointed as been here many times as have awards and also very popular when visiting Tynemouth and it's cold- great to have hot fish and chips! These have a think crispy batter which is delicious. Always a queue. They used to use vegetable oil but now switched to beef dripping which means pescatarians cannot have. Many chippys in the North East do this maybe since Ukraine or covid, so it's a struggle to find one that frys in vegetable oil but Chip and Fish in Benton are one of the few who still fry in vegetable oil

Thankfully we chose the correct way to enter (side door/ long corridor). Those coming via the main entrance were being barked at to walk round and use the other door, where they fell to the back of the queue.

Found cheerless atmosphere, with impression they wanted you to just hurry up, order, and get out. I told my two children to go & wait back outside with husband as I didn’t like the vibe.

Ordered two kids meals, and was promptly confronted by girl on counter that I was not under 16 so couldn’t order them. Had to explain myself (for a moment thought I may have to drag kids back inside to prove myself).

Despite high prices was still charged extra for ketchup, extra for fork, bag etc (what next, extra for drawing breath inside their shop, extra for a twist of lemon on my ÂŁ10 fish!!??).

Ordered fish n chips and other bits which came in separate trays. When I politely asked for a box (as it formed a meal for my husband and I didn’t want it set out in separate trays along the sea wall, like tapas for the seagulls) was refused unless I was willing to pay extra, despite already spending a daft amount of money on fish n chips. When I raised this, was told, “sorry, computer says no”( otherwise phrased as, sorry , our boss has told us we can’t do this). I appreciate not the staff’s fault per se. Managers/owners need to give their heads a wobble re accommodating service.

Otherwise, have given a star for serving warm,...

Whether I would revisit here again for fish & chips im unsure.

The staff was happy to take my money, approx ÂŁ43 i spent. I was mid-way down the corridor waiting patiently like everyone else to be served, knowing i had 1 hour left of carpark outside. Queuing for the food I accept, 30 mins i was in the queue. Once the order was made, I assume i would pretty much just have to wait for it to be wrapped, I was made to wait a further 20 mins for simple large fish and chips , scampi, and 2 kids fish bite meals 2 curry sauce and peas and my 4 drinks that was already ready.

ZERO communication was given that my food was going to be another 20mins, i was just told to stand aside and I will be called. 5-6 customers whom was behind me in the queue recieved their similar orders before myself, I asked the assistant (tall long blonde hair, young, plump) as it ws her that took my order -how much longer would I need to wait before my order was complete as I've been waiting ages for my food, and why are customers that were behind me in the queue have got there food before me? The staff member shocking reply was "OH, they are regulars that's why they got there's first".

What is the point of a queuing system? if this is happening. TERRIBLE TERRIBLE SERVICE from the counter assistant to even admit this 😒...I will go a few doors down next time...

I've been coming here with my children since they were little (so 20 years!). Now I live in Canada and have found it IMPOSSIBLE to get fish and chips like on our own east coast. I was visiting my youngest at Christmas and one of the first things I did was take them here to see if the fish and chips still tastes as good. It does! OK, when you walk in, it's basic. You stand in a queue in a long, tiny hall, pay and then move into the next room, which is all plastic chairs and basic cutlery. Within 10 minutes, your steaming hot fish and chips arrives and it does not disappoint. Crispy, fluffy fish, cooked perfectly (haddock and chips) and PROPER chips, not soggy, disappoint fries, which is what I'm used to in Canada! I must admit, the staff seemed miserable compared to how I remember them, but then they were working over Christmas and I bet they're not getting paid much. Overall, though, the food is fantastic and even though the surroundings are basic, you don't care when you can get fish and chips as good. There are other places nearby, but it's not the same kind of food - nowhere...
