Stepping into The William Peverel - JD Spoons in Bulwell, you might think you've time-travelled to the Battle of Hastings, if not for the local youth in balaclavas zipping by on bikes, giving the place a more 'modern-day warrior' vibe. It's a bit like a historical reenactment but with an urban twist—less about conquering thrones and more about mastering the art of the wheelie in the heart of Nottingham's spirited enclave.
Upon entry, the last thing I wanted was to get speared by an errant spire (you know how rowdy those Norman and Anglo-Saxon skirmishes can get), so I opted for a tactical retreat to the safety of the app for ordering. This digital fortress allowed me to dodge the melee and avoid picking sides in the ancient feud simmering between the bar stools.
The food arrived faster than Harold Godwinson’s army at Senlac Hill, but alas, it seemed the chef had joined a faking retreat with the garlic naan—missing in action, likely left behind in a strategic oversight. While the fare didn't quite conquer my appetite, with the meat a tad under siege (read: undercooked), the overall experience wasn’t a total rout.
The interior decor of the pub, though less expansive than the fields of Hastings, provided a cosy refuge close to Harold Godwinson's statue. Seating him as my makeshift shield seemed prudent, ensuring any stray arrows (or glares) were deflected his way rather than mine.
A word of caution: securing a seat during rush hour may require a strategy akin to the Normans’ clever use of uphill assault. Be prepared for a tactical squeeze, but remember, like any good invasion, timing is everything.
In conclusion, while The William the Conqueror might not have me laying claim to the throne of England, it’s a worthy campaign if you’re in search of a pint and a plunge into history. Just keep an eye out for those faking retreats—they might just outflank you when you...
Read moreThis was my first visit to Wetherspoons. It's quite daunting to walk in to a large darkly decorated cafe. The bar is situated at the back so we had to walk through the many tables which were quite tightly packed together. The bar staff were friendly but didn't seem to be enjoying their jobs so had glum expressions. Half of the tables had not been cleared from previous customers, and the ones that had been cleared were not cleaned so we sat at a table with the previous customers drinks spillage on. We only had coffees which were not expensive at all for the area, Bulwell, and the seats were comfortable. There was plenty of choice of coffees available, and the coffee machine was simple and easy to navigate. This was around lunch time so many people were eating what looked to be appetizing foods. The food smelled great but as we didn't try any, I can't give any opinions on Wetherspoons food quality. It did smell rather nice though. I'm giving this a 4 star rating as although it's quite dark in decor (wood panelling all over and weird pictures on the walls) it had quite a relaxed atmosphere and is quite pleasant for an informal meet and eat. Wetherspoons is much nicer than most of the other cafes in Bulwell, and the only reason I didn't try their food is due to being quite ill today. I will return to appraise their foods in the near...
Read moreAMAZINGLY HELPFUL AND UNDERSTANDING TOWARDS YOUNG PEOPLE WITH ADDITIONAL NEEDS!!! We went back to weather spoons as use to come here regularly, lovely food nice staff relaxed setting! we always found this place helpful and friendly .. My son has autism and has sensory processing disorder! This makes going places a bit of a challenge! He only eats and drinks very specific things...so drinks can be really hard..we ask places if we can buy the glass...so you pay for a drink but use your own drink never mind doing this as it's understandable {places don't let nor like you to use your own food&drink } the place doesn't lose out on the payment and my son get to have a drink of his own choice! We have been turned down even though they make money and keep their product in places.... When I explained and asked not only were we allowed to use our own drink we were not charged for a drink in its place!!!!! Nor did we get funny looks or judgment.....we found this place couldn't be more helpful friendly . We had a delicious meal.. My stake was cooked beautifully.. Brilliant value.. Happy son.. Happy and full brother.. And happy me! Be back at least once a month from now on! THANK YOU to the young guy who served and helped us,and the lady manager for her help and...
