This boutique hotel is nicely situated within walking distance of the train station and all that Oxford has to offer. The staff were friendly, especially the ladies who took care of the rooms, and Chris, who kindly carried our luggage up the steep staircase. The bed was comfy, the room spacious, and overall, the location was quiet. Water, tea, coffee and fruit were available 24/7, and breakfast was provided in the attractive dining area. |A couple of suggestions: |install a hook or coat rack, so guests can hang their coats or towels in the rooms; maybe remove a piece of artwork to better utilize wall space. |We stayed in room 4, which was directly above the meat smoker/kitchen exhaust unit, which hummed all night long. Not a problem if you like consistent noise. There was a fan provided in the room, which we left on all night to mask the noise from the unit. Unfortunately, the smoke from the unit also rose into the room, so we kept the windows closed if the smoker was in action. When the unit was off, it was blissfully quiet. Maybe consider upgrading/replacing the windows in that room - a modern window fixture would muffle the sound. |Breakfast was adequate but somewhat repetitive. Perhaps give guests the option to mix and match the breakfast items provided, ie sausage and toast versus a full plate of food. |Overall, we had a nice stay at the hotel and the suggestions above are provided to enhance the stay for...

So ... I turned up early on a Friday night 5pmb without a booking. I was informed food service wouldn't begin until 6pm then offered a seat and a drink which I appreciated as I knew how busy they were. The lovely waiter even helped me with my crutches as I got myself comfortable. I ordered a negroni which was delightful and accurate in flavouring . The ambiance is warm and cosy with a touch of rustic elegance. The music gently playing is very relaxing and if you are sat in the "smoking room" makes for an intimate dining experience. I ordered deviled duck hearts which came on a bed of lettuce walnuts and crispy black pudding with a lovely green apple and vinegar dressing. This was recommended to me by the waiter a gentleman whose name I can't remember but I do not regret getting this at all. The flavours were amazing and evenly matched . For my main I ordered the beer can poussin . A small whole chicken cooked thoroughly and infused with flavour . This came accompanied by a red coleslaw (tangy but delicious) and the best chips I've tasted in a while . Crispy in the outside and fluffy on the inside . Hot and filled with flavour . The waitress and waiter were delightful friendly and welcoming. Unfortunately I was too full and couldn't get a dessert but I will definitely get one the next time I go . Portion sizes are great and filling . To say I was content is an...

As an American, I grew up hearing that British cuisine was terrible. After my 2016 visit to England, this truism was confirmed (to some degree). This trip has changed that supposition, and I am ever opened to being surprised—or even blown away. We came to this restaurant tonight because our first choice was packed (and because it was convenient as we are staying at the boutique hotel rooms on the property). We were absolutely blown away. The dry-aged steak (a ribeye style cut) for two was cooked to perfection in a bespoke charcoal oven. We were in heaven. The service and beverages were great. It’s the best meal I’ve had in all of Britain (even better than a certain 3-star Michelin meal—for a third of the price) and easily one of the best steaks of my life. Lesson learned and reinforced: we all have our preconceived ideas and biases in life. It’s important to give things a chance and be open to being surprised. Try the Porterhouse Grill. You won’t be disappointed. It’s a carnivore’s dream.

Can't fault the place. The decor inside feels reasonably classy: leather, dark walls, dark wood, nice lighting. The staff are friendly and very helpful, they make you feel welcome. The menu is limited, but it's a steak restaurant, so find any steak you like, and you'll enjoy it, because the steak here is amazing. Very tasty food cooked by people who know what they're doing. Fantastic steak, excellent chips, even the walnut salad was really good, which feels wrong to type out! Had dessert too, also very nice. It's a little on the pricey side, but you get what you pay for, and it seemed like a fair price... apart from if you want a sauce with your steak - £3 for a small pot of sauce seems steep. Overall, do visit The Porterhouse. Don't bring the kids. Eat the steak. Feel good about life. 👍
