The Rickety Press changed their concept about a year ago. Instead of being a gastro-pub with really nice food they decided to focus on hamburgers and pizza. Instead of service at the table you have to order at the bar. The prices were slashed and they have embraced the happy hour concept. I am to this day still disappointed with this decision because this place is by no means unique anymore.
On the bright side; the hamburgers and pizzas are quite good! When you visit on a Monday you get half off from a small selection of hamburgers and Tuesday - Friday you get half off from a small selection of pizzas. The value for these is amazing - which make this place a great option at these times (although it can get a bit busy on Mondays).
The beers are cheap from 17:00 - 19:00 (£2.50 for a pint). And while this sounds great - their "craft" ale and lager taste of absolutely nothing. Other pizza and/or hamburger places understand that good pizza/burgers work well together with a nice beer; Beerd, White Rabbit, Atomic Burger, heck even Gourmet Burger Kitchen! Rickety Press' offering looks really poor in comparison.
The interior is still nice. It has this nice relaxed atmosphere and they offer free WiFi. I could see myself hanging here with a laptop for a longer period of time if I was still a student.
To summarise: Go here for the half price deals because you will get a great pizza or burger for an amazing price. If you're not very picky about your drinks you can drink for cheap after work hours. At full price there are nicer places that serve proper...
Read moreAnother local pub with a great atmosphere to review! It is probably our favourite pub in Oxford and we visit the place quite often with family 👪 and friends. It is also pet-friendly 🐶 and quite often crowded!
📍 Location: It is placed in the heart of Jericho area, so you can combine it with a visit to a coffee shop or before heading to Port Meadow for a walk.
🍲 Food: Both the dodo (beef) burger 🍔 and their dirty (chicken) burger are heavenly delicious. There is also a great variety of pizzas🍕 with kids sizes also available.
🍻 Drinks: There is a great variety of bottled and draft beers, try the local Dodo beer! The wine range is also remarkable.
🅿 Parking: There is a 2h free parking across Granham road during the whole day (literally next to the pub). Alternatively you can park at Walton parking area paying a reasonable price (for Oxford parking standard fees)
👷 Staff: The big asset of the place. They are always helpful, smiley and polite!
😉 Extra tip: Pizzas for 5£ every weekday lunch time...
Read moreNormally pretty good but had a poor experience with staff here. Asked for a pint of coke but got a full pint of ice and a 2 second top up of coke FOR £5! I asked for less ice in my drink which came with a look of derision. They obliged but still put a ton of ice in the glass although less than before, poured the first coke into the second and that didn't even make it up to the half pint line (even with the new ice) and then they topped it up. Ok so that's all sorted, a bit salty about the price and having to ask to get something fixed but that's how it goes. UNTIL another staff member commented on why the first was throwing away ice and the first then calls me an idiot and points in my direction.. while I was still at the bar, and clearly in earshot. They both chuckle and think nothing of it.
Getting ripped off for £5 for ice, asking for my drink and getting laughed at for wanting the drink I asked for isn't a great experience.
Foods still...
