Caffe Vita — Restaurant in Rugby

Been going here for years and taken many mates over that time. Food always nice and the servers friendly and professional. Coffee ok. Today, however, we had a very odd run in with who we assumed was the manager...

After we politely asked him why he doesn’t accept card payments under £10, he, for the lack of a better phrase, went off at us, right there at the counter in front of his staff and other customers. Spouted, out of the blue, that, “It’s always been the rule - can’t you read?”

Taken aback, I jokingly commented it was probably “something to do with tax”, which was a very bad idea indeed. The guy went from hot to raging. He started shaking with anger and got real shifty with the card machine: kept holding it out of reach and wouldn’t let me touch it, staring at me suspiciously like I was a suit from the government sniffing around his books...

After a few heated words my friend and I explained we were disappointed with how he treated us and wouldn’t be returning in the future. Unsurprisingly he didn’t seem bothered - which is a real shame as I’ve always tried to support local businesses in a town where so few survive.

Anywho, long boring story short, if the management changes I will definitely go back, but to be honest, I wouldn’t be surprised if the place gets shut down for tax evasion or something similarly nefarious. There’s got to be something...

We went to this place with the intention of having lunch, after reading the menu near the front door we decided to go in. One blonde girl took our order, I asked if we could have jacket potato with beans for our daughter, they had jacket potato on the menu but not with beans, Yes she said..I then asked if we could have beans on toast for our 2 year old son, no she said as toast was on the menu but not beans, I asked for more time to look at the menu. I then got asked by another girl what we wanted to order, I said just toast and jacket potato with beans. She then said we don't do beans on jacket potato, and barked it's not on the menu. I said to the girl that the other girl said it was ok....her reply "I doubt that very much" so basically calling me a liar. At this point we said to the girl there was no need for the attitude, stood up and left. This place seems to be staffed by teenage girls with minus customer service skills. I do feel sorry for the second young girl who attempted to serve us as she has obviously got ideas above her station, I would suggest another role that is not customer facing is a better fit.

We were about to sit down 4 us in a nice shade to get a lovely coffee and juice, maybe something to eat.

2 of us had a coffee cup in their hand which they have purchased from somewhere else.

We were giving our order to the waitress, who just let us know they are not serving food at the moment, when the manager stormed out and on it's way to the other customers he started rudely stating we need to leave, because we haven't purchased the coffee from them. We tried to explain we are just placing our order, but he rudely and loudly said if we throw out the cups we arrived with then they can serve us otherwise we are not welcomed.

I understand they have a policy you can only drink what you have purchased from them, but it could be communicated in a way nicely and professional way. All customers were shocked and the waitress apologised for her manager's behaviour.
