Such a lovely little shop. It's out of the way in Drumnadrochit unless you're going to the Loch Ness Centre, which we were, but it's WORTH THE TRIP!
It's got lovely ambiance and plenty of parking, the inside is as the picture shows: quaint with a ton of charm. They've got two wingback chairs in front of a wood stove and another bench in the window overlooking the street for additional seating
My mother, husband, two kids, and I stopped by for brunch on the way to the Loch Ness Centre. It was SUPERB. When we arrived, we were initially daunted by the fact that they did not take cards, so we drove up the road to the Coop to get cash from their ATM (which was similarly out of service), so we went on to the post office we are undauntable and traded some euros for pounds and went back to enjoy our breakfast. *NOTE: They generally do accept credit cards, but construction in the area had cut the wifi lines taking out their credit card machines and the ATM that we tried, so this shouldn't be a real issue going forward.
For around 40 pounds we all ate an exceptional breakfast. My mother and I had the full Highland vegetarian breakfast, with DELECTABLE vegetarian and vegan haggis (nuts/oats--not for the nut allergic), and soy as well as soy-free vegetarian sausage. The soy free one was made from sweet potatoes and other ingredients and was not very sausage-like, but it was still quite good. I was not expecting an alternative that I could eat because I don't eat pork and my newborn is soy allergic, so I expected to have eggs alone as usual. I was pleasantly surprised! The vegetarian haggis is the best thing I've ever eaten and I could happily have eaten 3. One comes with the breakfast, more the pity that. The fried eggs and housemade breads were delicious and it was so nice to be able to verify conclusively that there was no soy in the bread (commonly soy flour was used in Highland breads from what we saw).My older son had kids pancakes which were quite large and a vegetarian sausage (he's also soy allergic so this was so nice!).
I had traditional earl grey tea, which was lovely, but my mother ordered one of their special flower teas, which was not only beautiful (it's an actual dried flower served in a wineglass with hot water poured over and it opens as it's saturated by water) but delicious as well. The hot tea was served in antique china, and all the crockery was older and showed character.
I was able to breastfeed the baby in the extra chairs while my mom and husband spoke with the owner and the waitress. This wasn't just the breakfast we needed, but the experience as well! It was something I'd almost go back just to have again!!! We went on a Friday and it wasn't very busy, we were basically the only table there, and service took upwards of 30 minutes, so please don't go when you're ravenous. Be prepared to wait and enjoy the ambiance. As someone who cooks frequently at home, I understand that cooking does take time and there are only 2 cooks in the back and, though they may prep, it doesn't come out like it would at a place with line cooks and a lot of prepared/frozen foods. It is 100% worth it!
I cannot wait to go back to the Highlands if only to enjoy another Highland...
Read moreWas excited to try this cafe after the solid Google rating but left before ordering anything pretty disappointed. When we entered there was no acknowledgment from staff even though the sign says to wait to be seated; after a few minutes we had to go and find a staff member who advised us to take a seat and they’d bring menus. A different staff member came to take an order 5-10 minutes later, but no menus had been brought - so a few minutes after some menus arrived. Then after 5-10 minutes they came to take an order and then advised us half the menu wasn’t available. So after first arriving about 25 minutes earlier and still having no order underway for either food or drinks we decided to leave wondering just how long it would actually take; and the food both of us wanted on the menu wasn’t available.
While seated we noted other orders coming out that seemed to be going to the wrong tables and generally the staff, while nice enough, seemed to be almost confused and operating with no sense of urgency. There was a sign saying they operate quality food which can take time - no problem, we’re happy to wait, but the service itself needed a lot of work and I think communication amongst staff needs to be a lot better.
The food that we did see looked good so hence a 2 star giving some benefit of the...
Read moreWe came here as it was well rated and left disappointed. Previous reviews suggested the cafe was not dog friendly so we left our dog in the car, but were surprised to find an off lead dog running around the place when we entered. We waited a very long time just to get our order taken. The cafe was about half full when we arrived (with some tables already served) although it did fill up during the time we were there. Our drinks were provided fairly promptly however were long since finished by the time our food was served. Now, I do respect that they make their food fresh to order, however when our breakfast eventually made it to us some elements were both overcooked and cold, so it was hard not to feel resentful of the wait time when my food would have clearly been more palatable a few minutes earlier. Our breakfast was also missing both the potato rosti and the homemade smoky beans that were advertised so enthusiastically on the menu. There was no service check at which we could mention this but in any case we were not of a mind to delay our breakfast further by waiting for it to be remedied, especially since it was already lukewarm at best. Given the very positive reviews that this place has previously received, perhaps our experience was not representative, but we are unlikely to...
