Let me just say, that is meant to be one quarter of a star out of five for this location!!! After having a lovely day in Broughty Ferry, our group decided to stop for a snack for the kids in our group. We had family visiting from abroad and they wanted to go in as the food in the pie shop looked great! Now, usually, Goodfellow and Steven has pretty tasty items but this will never make up for the experience we had!!! We all went into the establishment, the visitors to the counters while my husband and I went into the café; where neither of us were greeted nor even acknowledged. We hadn't thought about it as we were just looking to get a nice hot bevy and waiting for the family to join us. As everyone seated themselves, there wasn't enough space at one booth so my brother in law pulled up a chair to join me and my husband at a table. The old woman serving that day, watched as everyone walked in from the shop's pie counters with bought items and seated themselves. She proceeded to loudly and very embarrassingly say out loud to my brother in law that he can't sit in the middle of the walking area because she needed to get around the shop, which is understandable but her tone, volume and attitude really embarrassed him and everyone at the table. He apologised and shifted to a separate seat. At this time, the rest of the family had their pies ready to be eaten and were about to give their orders to her; despite the fact that her face had an expression that would sour milk, make any baby cry and had never bothered greeting anyone!! Her first action was to point at the Goodfellow & Steven bought pastries and again embarrassingly loudly state that "you can't eat those in here. I will have to charge you café prices if you did that." It was then mentioned that the girl serving at the pie/pastry counter was asked if it was ok to purchase things to be eaten in the café and said nothing about company policies etc. We consider ourselves well travelled and appreciate that things are different in different countries but this woman was as welcoming as a wasp at a picnic. She seemed to like spewing about company policy to hide behind her ill manners and lack of professionalism; in fact, I will go so far as to say she shouldn't work in a tourist area!! My husband thought that the group, with kids, had had enough exposure to this awful treatment and we all got up and left!! Now, seeing reviews on here, I wish I had done this before we stepped foot into the place and spent any money!! It's no wonder why people prefer going to...
Read moreDisappointed. Not only is the food high priced, but being charged twice for your goods is appalling.
My girlfriend and I went into the bakery for a simple baked good at first, the smell was inviting and the goods enticing. But after buying our goods, and then seeing the cafe co-joined with the bakery, we went to sit down. Understandably they said we could not sit with our baked goods as there is a charger for sitting. So we asked if we were able to buy something in the cafe, which we did. Although we had drinks we bought Apple juice after a long walk so we could sit. We enjoyed out bakery goods and drank our Apple juice. But when we came to pay we were shocked when they told us that because we ate the cakes we bought in the bakery that you have to walk to to get to the co-joined cafe with our juice, where they sell a few of the bakery goods too like what we bought, they said that we would be charged for the juice, the cakes and then a sitting down fee. In a rush for our train, we had to pay for cakes that we did not eat. We would have happily paid the sitting fee and the juice but not for extra cakes! So before you go, is it worth the hassle? And the unfriendly staff? And the lack of information about extra costs...
Read moreHaving gone in to buy cream cakes as a treat, for the family, I was disgusted to find when getting home that the filling was not fresh cream, but an appalling synthetic filling that was tasteless and not edible. I am old enough to recall Goodfellow and Steven as a real quality baker. This in no way was quality, and if I had wanted a cheap, unpleasantly tasting, synthetically filled cake I would have gone elsewhere. I would also like to know what the ingredients of this synthetic 'cream' filling are. Would highlight also that the price was not in keeping with such cheap ingredients What a disappointment. Goodfellow and Steven really needs to think about what it is selling...
