Having been to the Isle of Lewis quite a few times as a Working Dog Sitter, this time I had the chance to bring my partner and 20 year old son with me. After having a lovely day in Stornoway we decided to end the afternoon with a quick beer before having to return to the dogs. We chanced upon McNeills first , my son was first in and asked for a Budweiser at the bar, one of the two very young bar staff (the male) asked for my sons id which he apologised and said he didn't have it and was refused, that's fine as a licensee in the past I understand the "challenge 25" law. But my son immediately said that's fine I'll just have a bottle of water. To which he was told 'no sorry you can't have anything it's the law" !!!! I interrupted and asked the young man (whom I might add looked younger then my son) why he couldn't have a water to which he replied 'it's the law' I could see my son was starting to get embarrassed so we just left. Well I am taking this opportunity to teach the young man the Law of public houses and the fact that you cannot refuse anybody a glass of water. Maybe the owner/licensee could take time to teach his staff the law. The only downside to our time in Lewis was this. The Star inn , The Crown Inn , The edge O' the World , and HS 1 all very welcoming and left McNeils completely behind in the hospitality stakes!!!!
