This is now my favorite Chinese restaurant in Glasgow. No other Chinese place in this city has drawn me back so many times. The real name is "Dongbei", referring to Northeastern China. The quality of cooking is great, the taste is authentic, and there's a wide range of flavors to choose from. Dishes are mostly £11-12/dish. I enjoy this place on balance as much as, comparing apples to oranges, the nearby La Lanterna (great service, ambience and ingredients but you pay for it) and Paesano (limited menu). Anyway, you will have a great time if you focus on the food and not the decor, and are adventurous in exploring what the kitchen specializes in, which is delicious, home style, northeastern and Sichuan cuisine -- expect punchy and spicy flavors cooked by braising, simmering, sauteing, and frying. Some dishes come in both northeastern and the more familiar Sichuan style. There are dishes based on pickled vegetables or vinegar that mix tangy and savoury, or tangy and spicy flavors, and you are unlikely to find these even in London/Manchester/Birmingham. But you will also find some Chinese/Sichuan favourites like Sichuan Boiled Fish or Fish with Pickled Mustard. If you like no frills fresh-made cooked dumplings, this is the best place in Glasgow. If you like fried chicken, they have a few styles to choose from. You will further find more than several offal dishes (e.g. large intestines, gizzards, liver, tripe). The flip side is that you should not expect southern Chinese dishes (so, no steamed dishes or clear broths) and you should probably go somewhere else for seafood, stir fried noodles, or vegetarian. If you find weird sounding dish names on the menu, consult with the proprietor. "Fragrant waist"? It's actually fatty large intestines, a delicacy for some. I would steer clear of the second half of the menu that includes the British-chinese take away dishes, because that's not the cuisine of the chef. It's actually rare to find a place with so many northeastern Chinese dishes and other northern favorites done well -- this...
Read moreQuite a big restaurant, looks small from the outside. There are roughly 8-10 tables . There is quite a book of a menu. There are so many dishes, hard to work out the traditional dishes if you are not familiar with them . They have the usual British Chinese food towards the back of the menu. As a family of four ( teen and small child) we picked three dishes and a soup and three portions of rice. This was more than plenty for us. The dishes took about 20 mins to arrive. Probably less time than it took for us to look at the menu and decide . We found the dishes were packed full of flavour. The cold chilli oil chicken didn't quite pack the punch of spiciness I was expecting but still nicely pouched chicken . The beef flank and mooli , the beef was tender and melted in your mouth . The mooli was soft but held it shape. The star of meal was the salt and chilli squid. Instead of squid main body parts it was the tentacles. Tender pieces each coated in a light batter and remained crispy till the last piece was eaten . Not overly spicy but lots of good flavours. Over all the portions were generous. The winter melon and pork soup was served in a giant bowl. Clear light broth soup that the children enjoyed
The one waiter was polite and patient with us. There was no rushing us to order. The bathroom, there is one unisex bathroom that is clean and large ( disabled toilet big) . It's a casual restaurant vibe.
Would visit here again if we are in the area. And would recommend it for anyone looking for traditional...
Read moreWas here with friends for late lunch on a Sunday. It wasn't very busy and we were able to secure a table for 5. Friends seemed to have enjoyed their food.
I tried their braised tofu - doesn't say they use egg tofu on the menu, with an egg fried rice on the side. The portions and presentations were fine, but both were far too salty. The MSG also meant an aftertaste lasting hours and the usual headache that I get.
Cash only - there're cash machines available not far, one's just round the corner on Byres Road.
Maybe it's worth it if you eat meat. But for someone on a meat-free diet like me, you aren't missing anything by going elsewhere. Would...
