First time I've ever visited the museum despite being a student of the university many years ago and a local boy. The museum is not all that large and the collections seems to be quite modest, at least what's on display when I visited. Fair to say that much of the permanent exhibition is a good collection of fine arts with "Artemisia drinking the ashes of her husband Mausolus" by Eramus Quellinus being my favourite. On the day of the visit there was also an exhibition of German Expressionism, which is more social commentary than fine arts. The Hunterian Art Gallery is also in the same building as the MacKintosh House which unlike the art gallery is not free.

The Hunterian Art Gallery, not to be confused with the Huntarian Museum, has a wide collection of priceless hangings and sculptures, as well as a copy of a Macintosh house. The gallery is free to enter but £10 per adult (May 2024) to visit the Macintosh House, although there's a free section before you enter the house. In the gallery, gawp at works by Rubens, Whistler, Charles Renee Macintosh, Rembrandt... Not easy to park there, but head to nearby Lilybank Car Park (£6 for 2 hours) and visit the bars and cafes in Ashton Lane after the art gallery.

We came specifically for the Mackintosh House and were not disappointed. The curation of the exhibit is so engaging, polished and authentic. Took advantage of the thoughtful senior citizen discount. The meticulous reassembly of the house interiors originally from 6 Florentine Terrace is nothing short of stunning. Mainly of interest to architects and design aficionados, the small turn out on that day allowed us to luxuriate in the rooms mostly to ourselves - such a treat! Certainly not to be missed when visiting Scotland.

Dr. William Hunter, an anatomist, bequeathed the University of Glasgow his extensive collection, which allowed The Hunterian to begin publication in 1807. Initially, the University of Glasgow housed everything in a single building, but over time, they relocated various components around campus. Current holdings include the Hunterian Zoology Museum for zoology, the Art Gallery for art, and the University Library for books and manuscripts. Discover all of this and more in this extensive and fascinating collection!

The Hunterian Gallery is right next to the Macintosh Museum. The Macintosh museum is not free but the Gallery is. The Gallery has a variety of exhibits from classic art to modern paintings and sculptures and performances. At the time they also had a Mary Queen of Scots themed exhibition. The Macintosh Museum is a recreation of the original house the artist lived in. It is an excellent way to get an impression of the unique style of the artist. A must see for all design interested.
