After scouring the internet for a special restaurant to visit for a birthday treat, we opted to go to Skips Seafood Bar & Grill. We weren't certain of the precise time we would arrive because of the long journey to get there, so we decided to take our chances and spontaneously walk in when we were ready. This turned out to be a foolish idea, due to a concert taking place at Hampden, so the place was almost booked out. In spite of this, the manager very kindly managed to get us a booth which we were delighted about because we planned on treating ourselves. The 2 starters and 2 main courses - oysters on ice with a vinaigrette and Scallops with black pudding followed by a seafood platter and an 8oz steak were all delectable and cooked to perfection. The limoncello tart was delicious too. The cocktails - cherry daquiri and martini espresso's were expertly crafted and tasted gorgeous. The champagne and wines complimented the meal perfectly. The music was fairly loud and yet didn't detract from the enjoyment of our meal. The service was professional, efficient and unobtrusive so that was good. We only have 2 niggles to mention. Firstly the 'seafood platter for 1' is on their website listed at ยฃ28, however on double checking this after we had sat down at the table, we were told that it was actually ยฃ40 for 1 which is a considerable hike in price compared to the price listed on their a-la-carte menu on their website. We only mention this here so that other customers are aware of it in advance. The second disheartening niggle was that when we came to pay for our meal, we were told that we 'Must' pay by card and they would not accept cash (which we had brought with us). We were not given a choice. They said that they usually accept cash, but not this night. So, having our preferred payment choice denied, we reluctantly paid by card. Just before leaving, out of curiosity I quietly queried the reason but was given a garbled baffling response. To conclude, while the meal was absolutely top quality, due to the second point mentioned above, sadly we would have to think twice about visiting...
ย ย ย Read moreI was really looking forward to a lovely meal at Skips as it had been recommended. Unfortunately, I experienced the worst service that I've ever had in a restaurant. Our table was booked for 6.30pm and when we arrived, our table was not ready. We were asked to sit at the bar and waited until around 7pm before we were seated. The waiter apologised and said that the people at our table were friends of the owner, so they clearly did not want to ask them to leave. We then ordered our meal and our starters came about 7.20pm which were lovely. An hour later, our main meals had not arrived and we asked the waiter twice what was happening and he just didn't return to let us know. By this point, we were starting to get quite annoyed and my husband then asked the manager what was happening with our food. The manager was extremely rude and asked us to leave as he was of the opinion that we were in the wrong and we were hassling them! By this point, it was 8.40pm (2 hours 10 minutes after our booking) - I don't think it's unreasonable to expect to have been served by this point. We also had 2 young children with us and the manager offered no apology, he just said that they were short staffed and busy. I am so disappointed as the restaurant has a lovely atmosphere and from other reviews the food seems to be nice. The manager has to manage his restaurant properly and let people know what is going on. If he had explained the situation in a friendly manner, maybe offered us a drink while we waited, offered a sincere apology - things would have worked out much better. Such a shame that we...
ย ย ย Read moreI was excited to try a local seafood restaurant (something we've been lacking in the southside). We ordered a selection of small plates to share as they sounded more appealing (mains were a selection of fish and meat dishes). We had the scallops, ceviche, shrimp, squid, ravioli, and loaded chips (we ordered the truffle chips but were given these instead). Highlights were: shrimp (these were huge and juicy with a nice crispy batter, lightly coated in a sweet chilli glaze). scallops (big and juicy with caramelised edges). ravioli (this was excellent, the pasta was fresh, the lobster filling was really well seasoned and tasty, and the thermidor cream was full of flavour but didn't overpower the dish). the salt and chilli squid was good, not over cooked and rubbery. I didn't enjoy the loaded chips (it had an American style cheese sauce on top) and the ceviche was nice, it also had some lovely fresh beetroot however there could have been more sea bass. I was driving so I wasn't drinking, I tried a sip of my partners pinot grigio which was nice, there was a bottle of albarino I would definitely order next time. The cocktail menu had a few interesting ones and we're reasonably priced. The restaurant is nicely decorated with a cosy feel, there is a small TV screen up on the far wall which was a bit distracting (I'm assuming it was for football?). The staff were nice and attentive, and the cost was quite good for what we ordered. I wouldn't say I'd rush back but would definitely visit again. I think it's a big plus for anyone...
