I genuinely did not expect to find Indian food in one of the farthest corners of the Isle of Skye, so stumbling upon Taste of India felt like a pleasant surprise. After days in the cold October–November weather, I was really craving something warm and familiar, and I was happy to see Indian cuisine on offer in such a remote location.
The food itself was… decent to okay. Warm, comforting, and it satisfied the craving, but the flavours and quality felt average to sub-standard. I understand the challenges—different water, local ingredient sourcing, and adapting dishes to suit local Highland tastes can naturally result in a modified, “pseudo-Indian” profile. Given the geographics, I wasn’t expecting Michelin-star authenticity; I was still glad to get a hot curry in the Highlands!
However, the service was the biggest let-down. One staff member in particular was extremely rude to guests who politely asked about waiting times, bluntly saying: “If you want fresh food here, you wait, or leave.” A simple smile and polite communication could have changed the entire atmosphere. What bothered me more was noticing this attitude directed mainly at Indians or Asian-looking guests, while the tone with others seemed notably different — which was disappointing and uncomfortable to witness.
Being from London (though originally Indian), I experienced something similar myself when paying. Their card system had a network issue, and before I could explain, the manager assumed I had a foreign card and brusquely told me to “go get cash.” When I clarified I had a UK bank card, the tone shifted instantly and suddenly card arrangements were made — which shouldn't be the case at a professional establishment.
Overall, while I’m grateful to have found Indian food in such a remote part of Scotland, the service experience overshadowed the meal. With some warmth, cultural sensitivity, and customer-care training, this restaurant could easily offer a much more welcoming and enjoyable experience for everyone.
I hope they take this feedback constructively, because it really could be a wonderful stop for travellers craving a...
Read moreBeware!!!!!! Overcharged, short measured, overpriced and lacking any taste.
What can I say about this place. From the get go it seemed to be ran poorly. Service was poor, we had to ask for our drinks a couple of times before they arrived. When they did the advertised pint of coke which was £2.90 was not in fact a pint!!!!!! Upon questioning the manager, his reply was that it was HIS pint. He must be the weights and measures inspector.
Upon taking our food order, the waiter had zero customer service skills and was rude when asked any questions.
The food portions were very small for the price and lacking of any real flavour. We were brought chips that were clearly cooked in cold oil. Hard and oily. As the waiter put them down we enquired what was the matter with them. His reply "that's how they come here". That was a warning signal, if they can't cook chips how can they cook curry. This assumption was justified as the curries lacked any real flavour. Now we were big eaters, never leave food behind is the moto. But we left food behind!!!
Then to top it all off we were overcharged. Luckily we checked the bill only to notice they had charged us an extra £17.50 for another round of short measured drinks that we did not have.
When we raised our issues with the manager he kept saying that he had been running the place for 20 years. Surely after 20 years he should be doing a better job.
They did adjust the bill and take off the cost of the chips after a lot of discussion. Even with this adjustment we all left with an extremely bitter taste in our mouths. They also would not provide a copy of the receipt.
This truly was a very poor experience. I recommend avoiding this place. Next time I'm in Skye I'll try the other place. It can't be as bad as this one. If I could give a zero I would.
One of my friends took a photo and upon further inspection we were also charged an...
Read moreOk, we arrived late (13h15) and the waiter notified us that we were expected to leave at 14h, could have been politer, but fair enough.
We started by ordering drinks: Coke and Orangina were served to the glass, out of a big bottle, which judging by the amount of bubbles left, was opened a few days ago… Of course, the price of the glass of Coke probably paid several times the bottle bought at the nearest supermarket, but Portree is a touristic town so that was to be expected, but disappointing nonetheless.
The food arrived reasonably quickly, but there was no way of telling the difference between what was ordered excepted for the tint of spices. The meat all seems to come from the same skewers, repurposed for the dish we had ordered. I did not ordered skewers, but my meat was cut in cubes and pierced by a hole in the middle nonetheless. The only nice thing to say about the food is that we were not sick afterwards, nothing more…
At the end of the meal we discovered that credit card was not accepted, although the table next to us being completely cashless insisted enough that the manager finally produced a functioning card machine in the end! While we were leaving the manager and one of the waiter started arguing, we thought at first that it was a rude way to have us leave asap, but in the end the argument became hot enough to be quite credible, with yelling and all that… While arguing the waiter was “doing the dishes” in the main room, just dropping cutlery in a bucket of hot water with a few drops of soap and wiping them straight away afterwards…
So, to be bluntly straightforward: do not go in there, even if you are starving! Buy a bag of chips, a can of coke and an industrial sandwich at the nearby supermarket, you will be...
