Disappointed and Unwelcomed Experience!!!!!

Cold service to match the ice cream!!!

We visited Caledonian Café in Portree hoping for a sweet break, but unfortunately, it turned out to be a disappointing experience.

We ordered four scoops of ice cream with waffles (£3.50 each) – tried the Reese’s Cup, Irn-Bru, banana, and pistachio flavours. The ice cream itself was just okay, not particularly memorable and definitely not worth the price. What made the visit worse was the attitude of the staff.

Despite being paying customers, we were met with rude and unwelcoming service. When we politely asked to sample a couple of flavours, the staff seemed dismissive, saying certain flavours were "finished" — only to watch them refill those very flavours minutes later when someone else walked in. It felt like there was a clear bias in how foreign visitors were treated, which was disheartening, especially in such a tourist-friendly place.

No smiles, no hospitality – just cold service to match the ice cream. We left feeling uncomfortable, unwelcome, and honestly, regretting the stop.

There are many lovely spots in Portree to grab a treat — I’d recommend...

Abysmal service from the older blonde woman. Very cold and blunt, and not welcoming at all. Refused to clear up the table we wanted to sit at out of pure spite as my friend, who was bursting for a wee, wanted to pop her bag on the empty table near the door (that we sat at 2 days prior). We waited 25 minutes for the table to be cleared and were never given menus. The women working there seem extremely spiteful and were very clearly gossiping about my friend and I and laughing. They were finding absolutely anything else to do rather than serve us, including one woman who began changing the toilet rolls in the bathrooms- we had used the bathrooms, and they did not need more loo roll... At the end of the day, this is a business- you treat customers awfully, your business will fail. Despite the male server being absolutely brilliant- AVOID THIS CAFE AT ALL COSTS. I don't need a reply to this review as what has happened simply cannot be justified. I hope the female servers have the day...

Stopped here for a bite after spending a day on Skye. On the whole, it was fairly good.

The restaurant itself is fine in terms of vibe - a little dated, and not much in the way of decor, other than some cool vintage coca cola ads on a wall.

The service was quite prompt and was friendly enough, so certainly no complaints there.

The food was quite good - I enjoyed my Bacon Cheeseburger. My onion rings, on the other hand, were in a sorry state. There were only five of them, and they didnt seem to actually have onion in them - it just tasted of batter. The coleslaw didn't have a great flavour, either. My girlfriend's lamb burger was tasty, as was her side salad, which came with a nice honey dijon dressing.

Finally, we did split a desert, which was very tasty, so kudos for that.

With all that said, this place, as with most restaurants in Portree, gets extremely busy right around 5:30, so best to make a...

This place had the dinner type food that I have been looking for in Scotland. I had the Smashburger and it was genuinely the best burger I’ve had while traveling. I often find that other places dont do much with their seasoning, cooking, toppings, and type of bun. However this place does. The fries were ridiculously good. While in Scotland, I have had to dunk my fries in ketchup because a lot of places dont season them with enough salt or they dont fry them correctly. The only downside of this place was that it was small and so seating filled up quickly. Thankfully I only waited about two minutes. I’m glad I did too because it was amazing food.

I remember going there on our first to Scotland back in 2008 and it was awesome, I was forgot about the name and even the location and while visiting Portree again we saw the restaurant and it was as a dejavu so we have to enter. It was full and we were 5 but at the end they could fit us in :) we ordered the burgers...... Wow just as good as last time, amazing!! So glad that after almost 10 years I can put a name on that fantastic burger :) staff were very friendly and nice as well. Highly recommended!!
