We were lead here by our noses! On our first night here in Portree we were desperate for some late night dinner but due to just getting here we didn't have time for bookings so were told there was no space - which of course is our own fault but the woman who spoke with us was really nice and still tried to find a seat for us but no hope. So naturally due to the smell of this place we NEEDED to come back. We booked for the next night and came in excited for some food, the smell alone making us look forward. Immediately however there was different staff on from the night before and they seemed rsther stressed - not really an issue as I understand restraunts are busy workplaces however this did affect their service. The first woman was quite hasty with getting us sat and offered us some water to start, which we said yes to but never did recieve. Not a massive deal but did make us question why it never showed. We then had a different woman actually wait us for our meal and she was nice but again, hasty like the first woman. The food was delicious so there is no complaints on the actual meal! But we did see that our order got placed on the wrong table, and it seemed we weren't the only ones as I overheard a few tables refuse meals that wasn't for them originally. The restaurant itself is gorgeous and very cosy/welcoming and I would recommend it! Just make sure to book before.

The service was pretty poor here. We didn't seem to have a dedicated server which may have been part of the problem. There were 3 different people that came to our table and they each came once (except for the final server who came twice). The first took our order, the second brought our food (and never came back with sauces we had requested) and the third came to get our plates and took our dessert order and brought it out. It took forever for someone to come get our order after we had been seated initially, which normally I wouldn't mind but our booking secured our table for a short time and I watched them come ask the table next to us to leave so the next group could sit. Honestly, I wouldn't have minded the slow service if the food had been stellar, but it just wasn't. The potato and leek soup was decent but my venison burger was sad and dry. My husband said his fishcake was just ok. We enjoyed the sticky toffee pudding though. I hope we just came on an off day, but we did find the overall experience to be disappointing.

Came to this place based on other reviews. We had a reservation and came on time. There was no one at the restaurant reception desk, so the hotel receptionist sat us at our table. We sat for a while with no one attending to us until we asked if we could have a server. Our food server was not unfriendly or grouchy, but definitely cold. She reminds me of the food service in the States. This surprised us greatly because we encountered nothing but friendly service in Scotland. We ordered the specials menu. I had salmon, which was light with crispy skin on a bed of spinach with cream sauce. My partner ordered slow cooked lamb with haggis. Lamb seems to be the specialty in the Highlands. It was tender on the inside and crispy outside. Would I recommend the place? I’m not sure. I chose it to be my last place for dinner before going home and I really wanted to like the place. Maybe I had too high of an expectation. Food was ok/good. Price is not cheap. Service, blah. I probably will not return because of the service.

Terrible food and service.

This "restaurant" has has a sign outside the last 2 nights we've been here saying the restaurant is full. It's hard to get a table anywhere in Portree at the moment, possibly due to staff shortages, so I booked a table for tonight to make sure we got somewhere as this was the only night we could get in.

Food Most of the food is rich with multiple flavours and ingredients and that may well suit some people but there's lots of constraints if you want dairy free, vegan, gluten free etc. Most dishes are impossible to adapt. There is one vegan option, a risotto, which is so basic and dated. I eat fish, but the two decent looking fish dishes (cod and salmon) were made with creamy sauces or butters or with meat added to them.

I ordered soup to start, the only veggie /vegan option (the scallops came with black pudding) and gluten free fish and chips for main. I asked for both to be dairy free and gluten free, as the menu said both could be made that way. The soup arrived with what looked like butter on the side. I asked, just to be sure and the waiter took the whole dish away to check. He returned after a minute or two and said they'd taken the butter off and also... SCRAPED the top of the soup off because that had cheese on it. Lol. If you've got a dairy allergy, which luckily I don't, this is a place to avoid! The soup - tomato and red pepper - was good. The fish is the most basic pub food I've had since '95 though. Thick, greasy, battered fish with pub chips. No peas, no garnish, looked all thrown together. It would look better in a wetherspoons!

My husband has scallops to start and then pork belly. He has a pretty free diet and enjoyed both. Both looked restaurantesque dishes, and a stark contrast from my fish and chips thrown onto the plate.

Service We were there for 45 minutes in total. We'd gone out for a nice dinner and whilst fast service is good, this was ridiculously speedy, from when we sat, to both starter and mains coming out. Made us feel we were being rushed to leave.

Both our starter and mains were delivered and the waiter /waitress threw the food down and left. No question about if we wanted anything else, any more drinks or to check back if everything was OK. Nor when they collected our plates did they check how the food was. I wanted to get some sauce with my main but there was no chance when the food was put down so I waited for someone to walk past to ask... A good few minutes went by and eventually I had to get up to ask someone.

We decided not to order any more drinks or dessert and left.

Restaurant As soon as we were taken into the restaurant /bar (hard to tell which it is) we noticed a massive TV in front of us playing the football. As we were seated we then saw another giant TV next to our table.

We were seated right opposite the toilets, with people constantly going in and out as we were eating.

There was an outside door next to us which was in a little porch, and a guy standing there fully inside the porch smoking, with the smoke coming into the restaurant and to our table.

The whole evening was poor and we'd never return. There is a restaurant a few minutes away called the Tongadale hotel, food and service is 100%, definitely recommend...

Absolutely delicious. Best restaurant I had been to in years in regards to the food. It was a rush as we could only have a table for two for an hour but the food was sooo good! My mother had the Grilled Salmon (had a try and everything from the salmon, mussels and veggies were so light and exquisite) and I had the Lamb Shank which came with haggis on the side. First time eating haggis and it left the best impression on me. Everything from my veggies, haggis and lamb worked so well bouncing off the taste of each other. The shank was large and tender and juicy. Haggis was strong earth taste with the herbs and seasoning hit hard paired well with lamb and veggies. Superb! I also had their Sticky Toffee Pudding, the ice cream was smooth and creamy, the toffee was buttery and the pudding has moist and rich. The whole meal was reasonable priced for the two of use with entree, drinks and a dessert, though Portree was a touristy place that would over price everything but the prices in the town were very reasonable throughout. The atmosphere was a rustic feel but an elegant kind of way, everything clean, and staff was nice and courteous but wanted us out in an hour. Definitely get reservations but I wish I could eat...
