Before now we've always gone to eat at Pencil Cottage, but this year the staff at Pencil Cottage were extremely rude to my Mum and I just because we are allergic to dairy. We walked out and went next door to the Old Thatch Teashop instead, and asked the friendly owner if she could help us with anything dairy free. She pointed to the cake cabinet to our left and said that all her cakes are gluten and dairy free, plus other food could be adjusted for our diet if we needed it. The cake was absolutely gorgeous (so light you wouldn't know it was gluten free) and it was hard to choose which flavour to try! We returned later in the week for my parents to have the Victorian Afternoon Tea for Two as an anniversary treat, the meal was adjusted so that there was no butter on the sandwiches, etc. The staff were also very friendly, we sat outside to start with and the waitress assured us that if we got too cold just to come inside and she would find us some other seating with no problem. The whole place is a warm and friendly atmosphere and we look forward to visiting again on our next visit. No more Pencil Cottage for us! 😄

As the name suggests, the Old Thatch Teashop in Shanklin Chine is a pretty picturesque Pink Thatched Tea Room in the quaint Shanklin Chine village on the Isle of Wight. As it was a nice day we sat outside in the pretty little garden, which is adorned with a small fairy garden and lots of cute ornaments. We visited here about 5/6 years ago, and from what I remember the food back then seemed a lot tastier and fresher then what we had this time! My wife and I both ordered a crab sandwich on brown bread, at nearly £8 each. On arrival, I could clearly see that they had used cheap ‘supermarket’ bought brown bread, and if I am being brutally honest the crab tasted a bit bland – certainly not worth £8. I think when we are back visiting the IoW, we will try one of the other tea rooms in Shanklin Chine which is a shame as it's a really pretty garden area, but I think the service and the quality food of the food has let them down.

We had booked in advance and our able was ready straight away. The staff apologized profusely for any delays as they had been very busy and were running behind, however we were happy to sit in the sunshine and wait our turn. The slight variations we made to our order did not cause any problems, and the service throughout was exemplary. We were astounded by the quality of the gluten free items which were also nut free; one of our party was able to partake of a full Victorian cream tea which she had not been able to eat for many years due to allergies. The staff was also diligent in ensuring the allergies were just with consumption and not airborne and made a point of saying they would be prepared separately to gluten items. 10/10 would recommend to anyone looking for a traditional cream tea afternoon meal.

We went in for tea and cake and there was quite a large range of cakes available. Menu had lots of options, from sandwiches, baguettes, teacakes, scones, cakes etc. Lots of gluten free and dairy free options and they are happy to accommodate any allergies or intolerances which is fantastic. Lemon cake was beautiful. Scones were served warm which was a lovely touch. Tea was very weak and took along time to ‘stew’ in the teapot. Unfortunately, the lady who served us was quite rude. She was quite blunt when my friend asked if they had something on the menu and he lady replied “no there’s enough on the menu don’t you think” in a sharp tone which was very uncalled for. Apart from this, the tea room is a lovely place. We didn’t get chance to see the fairy garden but will go again next time we are in Shanklin.

Stopped here today for a cream tea. It was packed but the kind lady fitted us in , but we were unable to sit outside as it was full. Curiosity got the better of me so I went for a scout in the garden. The garden had mature plants all around with tables and chairs strategically placed to give you some privacy. At the end of the garden was fairy garden which was well adorned with Fairies of all shapes and sizes. The tearoom is located in the old part of the town and surrounded with thatched roofed cottages. The cream tea was excellent and the host was very friendly. I would visit again

Every time we have come here the service and food has been amazing. But only do they do cream teas, but they do crumpets and muffins, alcohol, coffees, sandwiches, cakes and much more. The memory garden is quite amazing if you want to leave a message to a loved one since department. Always service with a smile and I do distinctly love the old thatch tea blend. Only slight grumble is the rice pudding we had. For the price, you would expect it to be home made. But it looked and tasted like Ambrosia rice pudding. £5 for a £1 tin.
