I regret not taking any picture because I was way too shocked when the food came.
Came following recommendations from a work colleague. I knew from the reviews the portion would be massive. But I didnβt expect it to be THAT massive. Like others said it came with free garlic bread and chicken wings (both rather nice). The snails starter came with more garlic bread. I ordered the steak tartare which looked like they tipped a whole pack of supermarket Β£5 mince meat on a plate. It came with even more garlic bread. To my shock another giant trough of mixed veg arrived (think old fashioned Butlin style roast dinner side veg). We had so much food for two people it couldnβt fit on our table. It genuinely felt like the chef never went to culinary school and had no idea how much food a person consumes.
It would have been fine if the food was nice. Partner ordered the duck in orange sauce. We got two giant slaps of duck breast buried in gravy, served on top ofβ¦a plate of McCoy crisps. I never thought Iβd see something like this outside of a Gordon Ramsey kitchen nightmare show. The duck tasted like that duck in orange sauce dish from a Chinese takeaway. Any pretence of French-ness went out the window at that point. It was a rather nice Chinese takeaway duck though once I stopped pretending it is a Β£20 main course from a βFrenchβ restaurant.
The seating was very cramped. Music was too quiet we felt like we had to whisper. It only took cash or bank transfer despite the visa sign on the door. The waitresses were trying their best though.
If you are an old fashioned meat and two veg person who has never tried French food, you might enjoy this place. As a foodie who wants to try authentic food I...
Β Β Β Read moreCame here tonight for my partnerβs birthday after seeing the 4-5* reviews and left HUGELY disappointed. As soon as we arrived, the ambience was awful - cramped tables with no space, cringe music and dirty, unkempt toilets. The waitress was lovely to give her credit, but they didnβt have basic drinks like cider or many wines, and were missing several menu items when we tried to order.
There were free cruditΓ©s, garlic bread and chicken wings which were fine but totally unnecessary. You could get nicer chicken wings from a fast food place, so if we were charged for them I wouldβve complained.
Starters were huge and came quickly so no need for all the free food before. Scallops were overcooked, and pastry on garlic sausage was raw or soggy so we asked to take it home (so we could cook it through and not waste it).
Mains were disgusting. Partner ordered steak medium-rare but got medium-well. My veal was overcooked, dry and sauce was just gelatinous cream with virtually raw mushrooms. I sent mine back and thankfully it was taken it off our bill. Main complaint is it wasnβt a cohesive meal like you expect in a restaurant - just overcooked meat with a huge plate of boring steamed veg. Not worth Β£20+ per main.
Waitress said there was only 1 chef so no wonder the food was vile. We will never be returning, and I wish Iβd asked for more off my bill as I paid Β£60 for what was essentially a glorified school dinner. If youβve ever had genuine French food, do not got here - if I could, Iβd ask for...
Β Β Β Read moreLovely owners/staff and delicious food. Huge portions and everything was perfectly cooked.. We ordered starters and mains. Didn't realise that once you order your food, you get given a huge portion of chicken wings served on buttery cabbage and cheesy garlic bread. More than enough for a starter. Ordered the French onion soup for starter (delicious and huge portion in (managed less than half of it after the free chicken wings and garlic bread) and husband had the prawn cocktail which was lovely. Husband's mains course steak was perfectly cooked. My main course prawns were lovely. All served with a huge amount of different vegetables (which we took home to have with our dinner the next day).
Very generous portions when ordering glasses of wine. Delicious cabernet sauvignon. Would definitely go again but wouldn't order a starter due to the delicious free (and unexpected) chicken wings and cheesy garlic bread.
Really nice, quirky and unpretentious local restaurant. Lovely owners/staff. Don't eat for a day beforehand! Thank you for a...
