Yesterday, I had the pleasure of dining at DE Yummy, a Ukrainian restaurant that was recommended by a Ukrainian friend of mine. The restaurant is relatively new and features a simple yet charming interior, adorned with the iconic blue and yellow colors of Ukraine.
Starters: DE Yummy Beef Tongue - For starters, we ordered the DE Yummy beef tongue. Unlike the grilled beef tongue I’ve had in the past, this dish was prepared by boiling the beef tongue, resulting in a tender and delicate texture. It was served with a mushroom sauce, which surprisingly complemented the dish very well. It was an unexpected delight.
Red Borscht Next - we tried the Red Borscht, which is essentially a hearty Ukrainian beet soup. The soup came with a side of bread that had a unique texture—it was somewhere between a cake and a bread, with a hint of seeds and a fig-like flavor. The soup itself was rich and flavorful, and the chunks of beef, which were likely slow-cooked, were incredibly tender. It was a standout dish.
Varenyky - We also ordered Varenyky, Ukrainian dumplings, and chose two different fillings: potato and mushroom, and beef. Both were excellent, and when paired with sour cream, they were simply perfect.
Golubtsi - Finally, we had Golubtsi, a dish consisting of cabbage rolls stuffed with minced beef, served with a tomato-based meat sauce. The sour cream added a nice touch, making the dish feel less heavy. It’s quite filling, so I would recommend sharing it among three people; one roll per person is more than satisfying.
Overall Experience In summary, my first experience with Ukrainian cuisine at DE Yummy was a pleasant one. The staff were friendly and took the time to explain the various dishes to us, which added to the overall enjoyment of the meal. I’m looking forward to returning to try their breakfast and coffee offerings....
Read moreThis exquisite little gem located in Sheffield city centre is a real treat from Ukraine called De Yummy. I want to begin this review by complimenting the waiter service provided by both Anya and Misha, which was totally flawless and an absolute 10/10:)
The restaurant is decorated in a modern style and has a feel good factor, which made me think I was back in Kyiv sitting in one of those cosy street cafe’s. More impressive was the outstanding Ukrainian cuisine prepared by Nadya, an economist by profession in Kyiv, turned master chef in Sheffield :)
The menu comprised of all my favourite Ukrainian dishes such as Red Borscht, Golubtsi, Stewed Cabbage With Meat, Chicken Kyiv, Varenyky, Blini, Pyrizhky and so much more:) For my meal, I opted for a mixed plate of Varenyky, followed by Golubtsi, and it was, without a doubt, couple of the best Ukrainian dishes I have ever had:) They were cooked to perfection, so huge compliments to Nadya, each bite was a delight, bursting with flavour that left me savouring the experience long after the plates were empty:)
For me, the atmosphere of the street restaurant enhanced the dining experience, offering a chilled out vibe that made it easy to relax and enjoy my afternoon. And then there was the dessert—oh, the dessert! It was absolutely fabulous, a mouth watering freshly baked Honey Cake, a perfect end to a perfect meal.
It’s a must dine place for Ukrainian cuisine, don’t just take my word go and pay a visit you will be stunned and lost for words, and if you’re lucky, you may even get the chance to see Nadya, the master chef, who occasionally pops out of the kitchen to say hello:)
See you guys at De...
Read moreThis place is a real gem and a fabulous addition to Sheffield's cafe and restaurant scene. I visited to find out what social activities and services Ukrainians in Sheffield had organised for themselves, as my partner and I will be hosting a Ukrainian woman and her small son from December, and I'd heard good things about DE Yummy. Angelina was exceptionally helpful, introduced me to Lviv's finest coffee, even providing an expresso on the house, and as a result of her generous help I'm now a member of a WhatsApp group that I'm sure will make our guest feel fully informed of Sheffield's Ukrainian scene and thoroughly welcome. Having achieved the main purpose of my visit i might have left, but I'm very glad that I looked at the menu first. There's plenty of interesting dishes to choose from and several vegetrian options. I had what I'm sure was my first, but not my last, plate of Golubtsi for lunch. If the rest of the menu is as good I'll be looking for Ukrainian recipe books for Xmas! The flavours and texture were great and the sour cream was an excellent accompaniment. With or without my Ukrainian guest I'm going to be a regular visitor so that I can get to know Ukrainian cuisine some more. Great for Ukrainians, great for Sheffield and great for me! Thanks again...
