We went to The Waggon & Horses yesterday for a family meal to celebrate our Daughter/Son-in-Law's Wedding Anniversary. The menu, although small looked inviting. However when the waitress came for our order there was approximately a third of the menu unavailable even though we were the only group eating. When the order arrived my "GOURMET" burger was lacking several ingredients so, when I commented, I was given another small rasher of bacon. The children who are not at all picky had fish, with skin on it (for little children? Come on!) which was brown and dry. My wife also had the fish which was huge. However when she began eating it was mainly soggy batter, hardly any fish and slimy. The chips were terrible too. My son had the roast pork dinner which was spoiled by old and grey colored potatoes. (He is in the catering trade). However to cap it all....my Son-In-Law ordered SEARED tuna fish salad!!!!! Now I'm no chef but seared should be very lightly cooked on both sides and pink in the middle. This was an extremely over cooked, thin, dry and very salty specimen. It didn't even bend! The salad was disgusting. He could not eat it after trying 2 small pieces but has had an upset stomache ever since.
We were attended by three waitresses, the first 2 of which were very attentive, helpful and friendly. The other one was grumpy with no eye-contact when speaking to you and obviously in the wrong job.
There are several other eating establishments in the area that have no competition at all from this one. It is sad because I remember when The Waggon & Horses was a very good place with a good reputation. What a massive disappointment.
We will not be back at The...
Read moreSunday roast post: I recently saw an article for the best roast in the city from the local paper claiming that X might be the best in the city.
Clearly they didn’t visit the Waggon on a Sunday before writing the article. Then they would know that it IS the best roast in the city. You’d think if it’s a True North (of which I love all) then surly they’d all be the same? How wrong you are. Broadfield’s is very good too but, the Waggon, oh my! The Waggons 😙 🤌🏻 Because whoever is chef at the Waggon on a Sunday, knows how to treat a ‘tato / piece of meat. Plus mixing it up with fresh seasonal veg, it keeps you interested.
I the lamb 10/10 same for the beef (and turkey at Xmas) However, I need to tell you about the pork belly. I have never liked pork belly. Chewy and something about the inch of fat has never sat right with me. My partner is mad for it and she always orders it. When it came I was like, “okay, I’ve never seen it like that. And what’s the crispy char all about? And why does it smell so damn good!?”. I tried some of hers. I still don’t like pork belly. BUT I LIKE THE WAGGON’S GOD DAMN PORK BELLY! If that’s not a compliment then I don’t know what is.
From the varying images we have from our many visits gloating to friends and family where we are on a Sunday. THIS is the best Sunday roast in Sheffield. It’s quality, the right portion because you’re satisfied (and I’m a greedy git) tastes perfect and is cooked to perfection. Bravo 👏
Ps. If the chef changes then this review is null and void 😂 but I still...
Read moreTook our mum for pre Mother's day lunch on Saturday. First, the booking we had made hadn't actually been booked, so 5 of us were put on a table set for 4, and then forgotten about for a while. No kid's menus were brought over so we had to get our own.
After 20 mins, no order was taken and after flagging a waitress she took our order begrudgingly ("it's not my section").
The lunch menu was incredibly limited (basically pizza or burger) and the food took ages to come. When it arrived, it was bland.
After finishing, we waited for our plates to be collected and dessert menus to be brought. A waitress eventually told us "2 mins". 25 mins later we were still waiting and by this time we'd been there for over 2 hours and eaten one course, with 2 young kids, so decided to call it a day.
We were continually overlooked in favour of clearing empty tables that weren't likely to be used any time soon anyway (it was fairly busy at first but half empty near the end). My mum was very upset and complained, and the only saving grace was there was no charge (and the service being so bad was almost comical if it hadn't ruined my mum's dinner).
This place seems to change owners every few years but the service has always been good with previous owners. This was our first visit under new ownership. Sadly we won't be going again in its current guise, and having spoken with a few other customers on their way out in the car park, I doubt we'll be...
