We were so excited to try Gather after hearing great things and reading the very positive reviews. There were some lovely parts to our tasting menu, but overall we left feeling underwhelmed and disappointed. My comments are based on paying £100 per person. We’ve had better experiences locally for a similar price-point. The snacks and bread at the start of the menu were great and there were other elements through the meal that we enjoyed. We were excited to have foraged and local ingredients championed on the plate, but for many courses they were either not discernible or spoken about. There were some courses that weren’t very pleasant such as the leek and potato terrine.
Like the food, there were some really thoughtful touches for the interior that were let down by others that were a bit odd or out of place. There were some simple things that could have instantly improved our experience in terms of the setting… Having lower lighting for the evening and slightly raising the volume of the music for the quieter start of the night. Updating the loo with something other than febreeze and basic soap. Washing the front entrance which unfortunately someone must have peed on the night before. Pacing the service- we had the plate whipped away when we were still chewing a...
Read moreSo much to say and so little time. Can with high anticipation for this experience and blew the budget on the evening tasting menu, I didnt get it with wine but optioned instead to mirror the wine pairing and get a few glasses instead along the way. All lovely. The food was impeccable, but as with these things, the portions are delicate rather than generous. I found, despite the 8 or 9 courses, I was still left wanting more. There were many many plates, and it felt like a gift that kept coming, but I wasn't fully satiated, which surprised me. I also wasnt quite as wowed as I might have hoped, not sure why. But the plates are all seasonable and change frequently based on local produce, so it might just be me who feels that way for what I had. The designs of each plate though are impeccable, beautifully crafted, like art. The combinations of quality local ingredients are stunning and unique. Its overall a wow kind of experience. A real treat! You wouldn't go there regularly unless you could afford it so...
Read moreWe and two friends had a fantastic meal at Gather early August. We took the full tasting menu with wine pairing. My only concern with Gather is that its printed menu (which is displayed outside) does not truly reflect the complexity and work that goes into the food itself, which may cause people to pause before booking. The descriptions fall well short of the actual food served, which was beautifully presented, innovative, interesting and tasted superb. Service was attentive without being overbearing, and the wine pairings worked extremely well. One of our party was vegetarian, and the restaurant's accommodation of this, whether through a full vegan tasting menu, or the ability to swap vegetarian courses into the standard menu was refreshing. Hugely...
