Spice Merchant — Restaurant in South Hams

The restaurant was busy upon arrival but we were quickly greeted and sat at a corner table. Poppadoms were offered and served promptly, but after that things went downhill. It was well over an hour before our order was taken. The waiter was obviously stressed and rather abrupt. It was almost another hour before our food arrived. Fortunately, the restaurant is 'bring your own drink' so we were able to pop out to the Coop to refill glasses. There were apologies when we were paying the bill, but by then we had had enough. Yes, they were very busy but our booking should not have been accepted or we should have been advised of delays. Food, when it arrived, was good but probably not as enjoyable as we prefer to eat earlier in the evening and past 9 is a bit late. This is simply the best Indian food we have ever had. And we have had a lot. I have also spent months in India on numerous occasions and both my partner and I literally crave this food. Amazing vegan options and dietary requirements considered.

The menu is diverse, exciting and ridiculously full of flavour. The staff are beyond friendly and polite greeting us with a warm smile every time.

Just had a curry here with the family. We each ordered a different main dish along with some sides. Unfortunately, the experience was let down by the service, which felt poor, and the tables, which were very cramped—less than a foot apart in most cases. The room itself was hot and humid due to how many people were packed in, which made it uncomfortable.

The food was a mixed bag. My prawn karahi tasted nice but only came with three prawns, which was disappointing. The other curries, including the house special, were fairly bland and lacked the flavour we’d expected. Asked at the end of if I was going to tip!!
