The Bake House — Restaurant in South Hams

I have definitely seen one or two of the older ladies in there be a bit rude to the customers in front of me. The other day the girl in there seemed poorly and just coughed on my stuff, which was not cool. Maybe wash your hands, wear a mask or some gloves before you grab that loaf (I understand there are factors that prevent you from staying home but its a bummer to think about whether the toaster will be hot enough to kill cold germs)

They just put their prices up again so we are in truly premium baked goods territory now and I got to say that makes me think twice about going in when some of the products are just okay and some can be a bit inconsistent. When the cheese straws are spot on they are awesome but when they are bland and limp (as they sometimes are) I begrudge that £2.20. And £4.50 for their seeded sourdough is expensive but its uniquely good, except when there is a massive air pocket inside that robs you of 20% of the loaf.

Came in just after lunchtime today (24th May 25) and paid £5.50 for a "Devon Steak Pasty". LOOKED amazing but just LOOKED that way. The pastry was decent BUT the potato inside was hard and undercooked and I am not sure what cut of steak you use or where you get it from but I'd get a refund. All but 2 pieces were full of gristle and inedible and halfway through I just couldn't stomach trying to eat the rest so it got binned. I have been in Devon now over 20 years and gave eaten well over my bodyweight in pasties and apart from Ginsters this is the worst one I've had. I would even prefer Oggy Oggy ones to these and would say even Ivor Dewdneys are better (and I wouldn't eat one of these if it were free). Very poor...

Great food as always however the service hear isn’t great. We came in a few weeks ago and was served by the same woman who was rude, impatience and acted like we were an inconvenience. But you never know what’s going on in someone’s life so just passed it off. Today exactly the same service from the same woman yet the person behind us was met with a smile and a warm welcome.
