The Wetherspoons Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis pub - named after the senior Royal Navy officer who laid the foundation stone for Southampton's nearby Eastern Docks back in October 1838 - is situated in Ocean Village and is a historic grade 2 listed building (built around 1870) that started it's life as the headquarters of the Docks Board Office. After 130 years of use as offices for various companies associated with the docks and shipping industry the building was repurposed as a pub (the Cork & Bottle) in 2000. It was taken over by Wetherspoons in 2007 and given it's current name 2 years later. Inside the layout has a nautical feel to it and this is reflected in a lot of the artwork displayed throughout the main room. The artwork also includes several features of local historical interest so if you like that sort of thing it's well worth a closer look. Being a Wetherspoons the food isn't cordon bleu but it is good, as are the drinks, and the prices are fantastic - always great value for money. I've never been there in the evening but I visit regularly for lunch and it's clear the place is popular because it's always quite busy. On the whole the staff are friendly, efficient and helpful and a clear rapport can be seen between those who have worked there for a while and their regular customers. I've been having lunch there with my family almost every Friday for several months now and it wasn't long before the manager started saying hello. I like the fact that she recognises the regulars and makes time to have a chat even though she's clearly very busy. In my opinion the Admiral Sir Lucius Curtis is one of the nicest pubs in Southampton so it gets top...
Read moreRude dismissive staff (One in particular), Awful food, steer well clear of this Wetherspoons.
After yet another episode of rude/dismissive passive-aggressive staff at the admiral (One young male in particular who only says "Enjoy" then deliberately ignores customers and pretends not to hear them) we have decided never to come back. Our Naan bread on curry night was stiff and snapped like a cream cracker and shattered like glass. We tried to grab the attention of the male in question and were rudely and deliberately ignored by him (Seems to be permanently rude and obnoxious towards certain customers). And so managed to catch another member of staff. We pointed out the hard naan bread and asked if she would eat that herself and the young lady shrugged her shoulders claiming "thats how its done theres nothing I can do" then came back to offer us free drinks. It was then we decided to leave. It's not the first time we have received poor food and been at the brunt impact of rude staff at this place. After curry night we won't be coming again....
Read moreProbably the worst wetherspoons I have ever been. The place is in need of a good clean and overhaul. Everything from the curtains, carpets and seats have stains and marks on them. I'm not normally fussy and have been in many pubs from this chain all over the country. Normally I really enjoy the experience but this left both my wife and I feeling like we needed to go home and have a good wash. We moved from our first table due to an old man throwing up in his hands at the side of our booth and some of it going on the floor next to us (this was at 5.30pm on a tuesday). We had already discussed moving due to the heavy soiling of the seats and my bench not actually been attached to the frame. Our next table seemed better but for the rest of our stay we were surrounded by flys. I don't normally write reviews of this level of negativity or of this length but our experience really wasn't enjoyable in the slightest. On a positive note the drinks are cheap and the staff are friendly. I won't be...
