Brickhouse Tavern — Restaurant in St Helens

Arranged a christmas get together with friends for the xmas period (long overdue) we were all thoroughly looking forward to the evening. Started great, we were seated in the raised area at the back. Drinks orders taken prompt. Food orders were taken approx 45 minutes into our booking and then took a while to arrive. Once it arrived i had nipped to the toilet only to cone back to a terribly awkward atmosphere. A lady from another table had come over saying we were on their table. Queue our happy festive moods taking a nose dive. The "member of staff" dealing with our table was informing us that the table was double booked and kept asking how long we had been (our food had liteterally just arrived). The same lady kept asking if we wanted the bill (as if to try and usher us out) as the other people wanted our table. Ive never felt so awkward at a meal in my life! We asked the said member of staff if we could speak to a manager to which she claimed that she was the manager. We were dumbfounded! Not once did she try to resolve the issue. Instead rather stirring the pot more! When we were complaining to her she kept laughing and saying its ok, they dont want the table anymore!!! So unprofessional! It couldve been dealt with so different at the start of the night. Never again will i return to this place, which is a shame as the food was lovely. Service was fine but slow, we arrived as the only people in the place and it took a good while for us to get our food. Starter garlic bread came and tasted very cheap, was clearly frozen rather than homemade and wasnt very warm. Sirloin steak was ordered but what we got appeared to be chuck, approximately 40% of it was gristle. Ordered a side of dauphinoise potatoes only to be told about half an hour after we ordered that they had not made any for the day and we would instead have to have chips. The seasoned fries and the chunky chips were also clearly frozen and came out lukewarm. The Texas BBQ Burger was not as advertised, came with lettuce, tomato and onion which I then had to scrape off and leave at the side of the board it was served on. The pizza was also advertised as having onions and peppers on it, which it didn't. Base again was clearly frozen. Not sure if it is usual for the place but the atmosphere was non-existent, no live music and the music that was playing wasn't great and didn't really match the vibe of the place. Staff also openly discussed having to go to Lidl to pick up more stock so I assume this is where the pizzas and chips came from. Not sure if we just got an off night due to so many previous positive reviews which was the reason for selecting this place for a family meal. To start we had to ask for menus even though the table was pre booked. Service slow in taking order and then was incorrect. Starters went without a hitch apart from the nachos were rank and the sauce tasted like pure vinegar. Once plates cleared, cutlery was not replenished for main meals and had to be took from another empty table as nobody around to ask ..the mains came out in dribs and drabs, couple of people had finished their meals completely before others had got theirs .. we were only a table of 6. The wrong fajitas came out to start with, king prawn was ordered but steak came instead, we decided just to keep it to share as a table but wanted the original order .. which was with rice .. no rice came or any offer of side for the steak one. A side order was also missed but of course was still on the very large bill at the end . Didn’t find the service attentive at all .. some of the dishes could be improved especially S&P ones.. the meat dishes however were extremely good and would recommend.
