Visited yesterday with a party of 13 from Vegan Manchester for a Vegan Sunday Roast. The kitchen excelled themselves. I added extra roasties and Vegan Cauliflower Cheese as side dishes to my main. The chef produced a truly amazing Vegan Yorkshire Pudding specially for us. This was followed by a spectacular Vegan Chocolate Brownie & Ice Cream. Drinks selection and service was top notch as were the surroundings. There was a limited number of free on street spots in the vicinity with plenty pay to park close by. I'll definitely be back šŸ‘šŸ˜˜šŸ˜Š

I first visited Hillgate almost 50 years ago when it had a famous pub crawl. Most of the pubs have gone as has ( recently) the Robinson's brewery. The Red Bull remains as a great Robinson pub. Lovely multi room pub retains a traditional feel. Large rear beer garden. Also a Pool room. Paulicarus ordered an excellent pint of Unicorn. A refreshing golden ale.Mrs MDL a pint of Madri. About £9.55 for the two.

Lovely hotel, unfortunately didnt get chance to try the food but the place looked beautiful and the staff were brill! Only thing I will say there is no one downstairs after 10/11pm and they dont open to 12pm so it can be a pain if you want to check out or need anything. Still 5 stars tho!

I stayed here for one night on business and was given room 142. I am sure it was the room furthest away from reception but hey ho, off I went in my search.||After some wiggling about of my electronic door key (It didn’t seem to work whichever way I put it in: I really didn’t want to walk all the miles back to reception), I got into my room and was pleasantly surprised.||The room had a double bed and a small double so I had a choice of sleeping arrangements. I don’t understand it though when there is clearly only one occupant, why they are given more than one bed. Perhaps in case I change my mind in the night?||The room was very large with duel aspect windows.|Whilst the decor/furnishings appear very tired and in need modernisation the room was clean and warm. |I had a large bathroom with shower and bath, but no shower curtain which I thought a little odd however I did notice a drain in the floor so I guessed it was ok.||I went to the brasserie for an evening meal and enjoyed a superb Indian starter and main: I had the chilli masala king prawns for main which was delicious. Highly recommended.||Satisfied I returned to my room and lay on the bed to read. ||The bed was not the greatest and a bit like a hammock, certainly in need of a mattress replacement. |That night I didn’t sleep very well and woke early which was a good job as at 06.30 the fire alarms went off. |I was just putting on my shoes when they stopped so I guessed there was no fire. Had I been asleep this would have been a rude awakening but not as rude as no fire alarms and a real fire! One of those things and comforting to know they work.||Overall good food, and a clean and comfortable hotel. I have certainly...

The bar service are always friendly. I have gone here for years, and noticed (from how all the bar staff talk about him) that the chef is an arrogant, mediocre cook. From being incapable of ordering sour cream to go with the chili con carne (each time I've asked over the last 3 months he's apparently 'just ran out'), to always wanting to be out if the building by 8pm at the latest (they apparently serve food until 8pm but have been unable to place an order at 7:40pm on a number of occasions).

I've previously sent a chicken burger back as it was so overcooked it was hard. He eventually sent my replacement meal out, with his apologies. I was told by the waitress I should be honoured I got an apology as he never does that. Honoured? No I'm just glad to be getting an edible meal, as I requested.

My suggestions to this pub are:

  1. Order all of the ingredients for the meals on your menu, or change the menu. Cutting corners makes you look cheap.
  2. Review your kitchen staffs hours, or alter your advertised serve times.
  3. Your cook is not Gordon Ramsey. He's not got any particular talent you can't find elsewhere, the burnt chips I ate last night are testament to that.

I've eaten my last meal here and will find 'honour' at a more capable establishment in Stockport...

The rooms are done up to look good in photos, they are clean internally. The entrance stairs were filthy, and the beergarden/rear exit way was dirty. There was black ice all over the pathway to the rear external exit, customers would have no choice but to cross it when leaving via that route. In the event of a fire this would have been a disaster. Staff were informed but only put an ineffective cleaning sign in the middle of the ice. Cigarette butts frozen in the black ice. |The outer doors and rear gate were left unlocked overnight. The room was cold, bedding was not sufficient, the heating was noisy. The staff said they had nothing to do with the rooms. Gave me a dirty blanket when I explained I was cold because they had nothing else to give me. No cups with the kettle, no remote for the TV, staff couldn't locate it. There is no food available. It was not possible to contact anyone after the pub finished trading. This was a...
