A party of seven booked for a Xmas lunch. We were given a menu prior to our visit in order that we could chose our respective dishes. Only one of our party found their dish appetising as it was prepared for a special dietary requirement. The rest were served dishes which were not as ordered. It transpired that we had been given last year's Xmas menu although it was dated 2022. Two starter dishes ordered were Prawn Cocktail with Salmon. What was served was a helping of prawn mayonnaise, (no salmon), loose on the plate with a green salad dressing. For my main course I had ordered Fillet of Sole stuffed with crab and prawn, lightly breaded and deep fried. Served with tomato, mushroom and white wine sauce. All I can say about this was it was just a basic fish & chips without the chips. We were all served large quantities of roast potatoes with limp vegetables. Another order we expected was for an Apple & Rhubarb Crumble served with custard or double cream. What was served was a fruit pie, again not what was expected. Most of our party accepted what was served as some were on a time restraint and felt something was better than nothing. A feeling which obviously emanated from the kitchen. Lastly all food was served on very cold plates. Complaints were made and the reaction was "I'll tell the Chef". In this troubled time when restaurants and pubs are closing the management of The Jolly Sailor should be concerned to know that six people came away disguntled knowing that we will not...
Read moreTerrible food. Bland overcooked freezer food. Ordered the trio of cheese starter, king prawns from the special and a side of garlic bread. The starter was just wrong, 3 lumps of cheese battered in the fryer and chucked on a plate with a sorry looking salad. The batter was so thick you could hardly distinguish which melted ball of cheese you were eating. The side of garlic bread was cold, soggy and slightly rubbery almost like its gone straight from freezer to microwave to oven. But the worst was the tempura king prawns: the prawns were rubbery and overcooked and had been covered in the thickest of batter, the kind you'd expect from a cheap fish n chip shop. To accompany the prawns was a cheap store bought sweat chilli dip, some straight from the freezer fries that where all stuck together and some unseasoned peas. Nothing served had been cooked with any care or thought (or seasoning for that matter). Alarm bells should have rung when they told me that the tempura prawns came with chips and peas, a combination chosen by someone with no palate. Such a lovely pub with friendly atmosphere and staff completely let down by a terrible kitchen. The loosely termed chef has either lost all passion or all taste buds. After complaining I received a full refund. But im affraid the not so Jolly Sailor......its...
Read moreWe took a day trip to the beach to visit Teignmouth, having looked online for somewhere for lunch we decided to visit this charming looking venue
We were certainly not disappointed, having travelled down by train we got to the venue earlier than we had planned and on ordering drinks etc we were shown our table but were invited to have a drink outside in the blazing sun before settling down to eat
The venue has two beer gardens, one at either side of the venue and both are very spacious and lovely areas to sit in
On returning inside to eat, the staff were very welcoming and offered that little bit of charm and friendliness that adds so much to a visit
I had squid chunks and my partner had the creamy garlic mushrooms as starters, both dishes were very tasty, perfect temperature and very sizeable portions too. For our mains, being beside the sea I had to had fish and chips and my partner had the stuffed pork loin.
Again both dishes were very tasty and massive portions, absolutely faultless food and perfect taste.
All in all a perfect venue, the staff were all very welcoming, knowledgeable and polite, all a credit to the venue If we visit the town again we will...
