Title: Disappointing Experience – New Business Taken Advantage Of
As a new small business owner specializing in home baking, I was excited when a new shop owner approached me to supply cakes for their store. It felt like a wonderful opportunity, and I was genuinely grateful to be asked.
In preparation for the shop’s opening, I was also asked to help clean the premises for a fee. I spent two hours doing this and was eventually paid — but only after chasing for three days. Additionally, I was asked to bake 60 cupcakes for the launch event; I generously provided 80 but only charged for 60. I also loaned one of my own cake display units, expecting it to be used for showcasing my products.
Unfortunately, over a week later, I have still not been paid for the cakes. Despite the original agreement being that I would be paid in cash, I’m now being told that it’s the shop owner’s business partner who is responsible for payment — a partner I’ve never dealt with. Meanwhile, the shop still has my display unit, which was not inexpensive, and efforts to retrieve it have been unsuccessful due to the store being closed when I visited.
What’s most disheartening is the lack of respect for my time, effort, and professional contribution. I’ve been met with repeated excuses about how busy the owner is, but no consideration has been given to the fact that I’m also working hard to build a small business from the ground up.
I’m sharing this experience as a caution to others, especially small business owners — please be very careful when entering into informal agreements with this shop. My hope is that no one else will find themselves in a similarly disappointing and...
